Marymount College pushed aside their senior disappointment from day one to land two junior teams in the semifinals in September. And they weren’t the only stars of the show on big day two. Check out the REPLAYS.

Marymount College kept their AFLQ Schools Cup junior male and female title ambitions alive with impressive wins in the SEQ quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The boys kicked 16 goals in an impressive 102-27 success over Siena Catholic that pushes them into a semi-final showdown with Palm Beach Currumbin in September.

The girls handled the pressure of a closer game particularly well, eventually prevailing 62-33 over Loreto College. They next face Helensvale in September.

They were join in the next stage by Mountain Creek who proved too strong for Southport SHS.

Meanwhile, Helensvale have powered through to the senior male semifinals after a 75-25 victory over Pacific Pines.

In the senior girls games, St Teresa’s Catholic edged out Lindisfarne by a mere one point, while Pacific Pines turned thre tables on Helensvale, winning 45-14.

St Rita’s College ended Marymount College’s shot at the AFLQ Schools senior girls title at the quarter-final stage with a thrilling two-point victory on Wednesday.

In a low-scoring affair, St Rita’s prevailed 4.2 (26) to 3.6 (24) as Marymount paid the price for some inaccurate kicking. They will now face Varsity College in the semifinals in early September.

Stuartholme have joined them on the semifinal stage after they disposed of Cavendish Road 29-24. Their next opponent will be decided after Wednesday’s games.

In the senior boys, St Laurence’s are looking one of the teams to beat judging by their 78-point demolition of Southport.

They next face Cavendish Road, who proved too strong for Mountain Creek. in what is shaping as an intriguing semifinal.

St Laurence’s look set for a bright future for many years to come after their junior boys took down Helensvale 91-34. Meanwhile, Brisbane South SSC enjoyed a comfortable 9.7 (61) to 3.8 (26) success over a wayward Park Ridge.

Cleveland and Helensvale emerged with victories in the two junior girls final eight games.

Cleveland posted the best result of the day in beating St Josephs 88-2 while Helensvale escaped with a 27-24 victory over Brisbane South SSC.

Marymount College has never won the AFLQ Schools Cup, but this year’s crop of senior girls may just be their best hope yet.

The Schools Cup is an almighty tough competition to win, however largely the same group of girls that will line up for Marymount’s senior side in next week’s South East Queensland quarterfinals achieved the school’s best every finish of third three years ago, in the junior girls category.

Marymount’s senior girls will face St Rita’s College at 12.15pm on Tuesday in their quarterfinal.

Marymount’s head of AFL, Matt Carroll, who is also the senior girls coach, is tempering his expectations despite the promising track record his group has.

“Eventually you run into the schools of excellence and it’s very difficult to match their depth,” Carroll said.

“That’s the thing that really gets you, you might have some talented girls but you don’t have the depth.

“A lot of this stuff depends on the opposition, which we have no control over.

“It’s not like we can do any scouting reports or anything. We don’t know what we’re walking into but we’ll just go out and have a go and see what happens.”

As is the case at many schools, the Marymount sides have been training weekly since term one, however when they travel to Yeronga on Tuesday they will be without star player Bronte Parker, who will be representing the Queensland under-18s.

“There’s a few others that are handy enough, it’s a pretty even team,” Carroll said.

He estimates his side will include six to 10 cross-code athletes who have already represented the school in as many as four sports, including Aussie rules, rugby league, touch footy, and Oz Tag.

This year’s senior girls competition will be keenly contested.

“A lot of them will have a go at anything, they just love their sport, they’ll put their hand up and have a go at anything, which is fantastic,” Carroll said.

Following the senior girls quarterfinal on Tuesday, Marymount’s junior boys and junior girls sides will be both be in action in their quarterfinals on Wednesday at Ormeau Sports Park.

“The junior boys and junior girls have produced a couple of really good gala days so far and now we’re building into the stand-alone matches,” he said.

“It’ll be interesting to see how they go in those longer formats.

“There’s some good stuff building underneath.”

Carroll also noted how much the general interest in Aussie rules had picked up across his 20 years at Marymount.

“Early days it was us getting a lot of cross-code athletes to come give AFL a try, but the last few years our teams have pretty much been filled with AFL players at club level,” he said.

“It’s changed pretty significantly, instead of going and asking players we’re now turning players away and have to have genuine team selection.

“It’s great because it speaks to the rise and the popularity of the sport on the Gold Coast, it’s a sport that is continuing to grow heavily in the region.”
