A 10-goal haul for spearhead Jackson Calder was just rewards for what was a dominant display for St Mary’s against their old rivals Darwin Buffaloes.
Saints came in after a close defeat to PINT the week before and put the gauntlet down disallowing Buffaloes from scoring a goal for the entire first half.
And on the opposite side Calder was an overwhelming presence kicking 10 and setting up a few more to propel his side to a 22.15 (147) to 2.4 (22) win.
It comes after what had been a slow start to the season on the scoring front for the three-time NTFL leading goal scorer with just three majors from Saints’ opening four games.
His new teammate in Luke Patterson had grabbed the headlines a couple of weeks before with seven goals against Wanderers, but Calder wasn’t to be out done on this occasion.
Just 10 minutes into the encounter at Gardens Oval Calder had three to his name, equalling his season to date, and by match end he was top of the season’s tally with the rest of Round 6 to come.
His captain Dylan Landt, who copped a heavy tag, ensured he got plenty of service bombing into the forward line with Saints largely winning the midfield battles.
Josh Smithson and Charlton Offermans were others getting their hands on the ball plenty through the middle, while ruck Darren Walters gave the Green Machine a competitive ruck option.
The Buffaloes were missing plenty of experience from the off with skipper Jarrod Stokes injured while veteran Matt Campbell was forced to pull out moments before the game.
The Double Blues struggled with the pressure game that Saints small forwards such as Nick Yarran and Xavier Vallejo thrive on.
On the few occasions the Buffs did break through dropped marks and the intercepting work of Kieren Parnell sent them the other way.
The Buffaloes did have the first shot on goal through former West Adelaide SANFL player Taite Silverlock but as his shot went wayward so too did their game.
They did enjoy a purple patch late in the third quarter as Isaac Hucker found himself on the run and though his shot missed it set up an opportunity for Nathaniel Cooper to land the first of the game.
Some Tanner Coulthard smarts in the middle allowed the side to kick on and soon after Chris Atkinson landed the side’s second, but soon after was when Calder scored his seventh.
The Green Machine scored nine goals in the final term switching Calder off once he had his 10th, which gave chances to likes of Jackson Braunthal and Matthew Fleming to add their touch to the board.
“That was really good fun, it’s been a bit of a slow start in terms of goals but in terms of the year we’ve had a good start,” Calder said.
“It’s great to have another forward up there, we’re working well together and I guess it was my turn for a few to help the side bounce back from last week.
“For me it’s about playing my role and helping the side get the win, I probably get judged on my goals but we don’t really care who kicks them as long as they come.
“It’s obviously nice to get a few but if someone is in a better position we try and give it to them and I think that will go a long way for us this season.
“The mids and backs were unbelievable, being such a small ground they were almost kicking it right to us when they turned it over and we kept them goalless for nearly three quarters.”

Preview
St Mary’s and the Darwin Buffaloes are set to meet in a must-win clash this Friday night following a number of recent defeats for both sides.
Every moment of the match will be live streamed from 7pm by The NT News and KommunityTV as part of our season-long NTFL coverage.
WHY TO WATCH
St Mary’s will want to avenge their recent defeat to PINT in what truly was a game played on a knife’s edge into the final quarter.
There’s plenty to like about this Saints team led by one of the league’s premium ball winners in Dylan Landt.
Dual spearheads Jackson Calder and Luke Patterson will want to return to their accurate best after just one goal between them against the Greenants.
After a slow start against Tiwi last week, the Buffaloes came to life in the final quarter but will need to carry that momentum for a full four quarters if they want to walk away victors in round 6.
While captain Jarrod Stokes was missing in that clash, the likes of Tanner Coulthard and Bradley Stokes stood up when called upon.
The Double Blues always rise against St Mary’s and will fancy that they can at least cause some damage at Gardens Oval, a ground the Saints didn’t have much luck at last season.
