Kosta Boubaris says 2018 has been an ‘amazing’ year for Hellenic

Hellenic is experiencing its most successful-ever season due to the family culture that drives it, president Kosta Boubaris says.

All five of the Greek club’s senior grades will play in grand finals tomorrow for the second consecutive year, with its men’s premier league team still undefeated in the league.

The side’s only loss came in the now Territory-famous 4-3 FFA Cup Round of 32 match against Western Sydney.

“The success we are seeing today has come about because of the people which have worked over the last 60 years to create a great culture, to make the club a destination where people want to come and play,” Boubaris told the NT News.

“We have gone through the whole year — bar the FFA Cup — with only one draw. I don’t know any other team in the history of the local competition that has done better than that.

“The FFA Cup tops it off, how well we did in that match (against the Wanderers). The buzz and excitement it created on the night, in town and in the weeks after, was amazing.

“And obviously, getting the five teams into grand finals for the second year in a row, it is an amazing achievement and it couldn’t have come at a better time, with the club celebrating its 60th year.”

Since becoming president in 2013, Boubaris has presided over a period of sustained prosperity, which is ultimately what inspires him.

“I do put a lot of time and effort into the club; it’s a club that goes back a long way in my family’s history,” he said.

“My father was a past president, my uncle has been involved since 1959; he still turns up to every men’s training session and carries the water. That’s the main reason why I got involved and the main reason why I do so much now … to see the club being successful is what drives me.

“But it’s not just me. There are a lot of people associated, whose grandfathers and fathers played for the club, and that’s what makes it so special.”
