TRACY Village’s depth of youth showed as it surged into the Darwin Basketball Championship final with a 124-85 win over Essington Cannons in the preliminary final.

Jets hit hard early on with import Jerron Jamerson (34 points) and young gun Will Burton (22 points, four three-pointers) racking up early points and getting their fans on their feet.

But Cannons stayed in it for much of game with Lachlan Shipway (24 points) and Raymond Jarrett (32 points) impressing throughout the first three quarters.

The Jets kept coming though, with all their players making a contribution such as Ned Stevens (15 points), Keenan Abbott (16 points) and Joel Stevens (nine points).

Younger guys such as Thomas Malseed, Brenton Weedon and Ambrose Maclean got some significant minutes as a confidence booster ahead of next week’s big dance against Eagles.

Tracy Village’s deep playing talent proved crucial as it pulled away in the final quarter and started to have fun with their lead, while Cannons couldn’t find a breakthrough with turnovers proving costly.

“It was really good. We pushed the ball and the chemistry between the team really came together out there,” Jamerson told the Sunday Territorian.

“Everyone was having fun and we just played for each other not only offensively but defensively as well. And I think having fun was the biggest thing for us. We didn’t want to lose last week (against Eagles) but I think that was the best thing for us not only in humbling us but knowing what we needed to work on in practice and on the court.

“A lot of the young boys and players that don’t play a lot of minutes were able to get that confidence and that only helps us going into that grand final with them now being ready to play.

“Next week we just have to make sure we play our game and don’t let them dictate the pace. If we can do that we should be OK.”

And while the young stars at Jets have had a massive year, their form has only lifted with Jamerson on board, the import named the league men’s MVP after a big season.

“It was good to get that accolade, I thought it was a long time coming,” Jamerson said.

“I’m not always one to pay attention to awards because my goal is always to win. But for me it was great to be appreciated for all the hard work I put in for the team and them for me.”
