Star Northern Territory basketball prospect Freddy Webb has signed with the Mackay Meteors in what will be his maiden NBL1 campaign.
Webb joins the Meteors for the 2021 season following a standout 2020 season in the Darwin Basketball Championship with Ansett, after a two-year stint at Central Maine Community College in the United States.

The 21-year-old averaged 19.7 points, four rebounds and 3.5 assists a game in the 2020 season, pushing his Ansett outfit into the Darwin basketball finals.
The young gun received plenty of accolades throughout the season, including under-23 player of the year, defensive player of the year and was named a member of the All Star 5.
And with ambitions of taking his game to the next level the point guard put his name forward for the NBL1 gathering attention from plenty of sides.
“I spoke to a lot of people in Darwin about the NBL1 and potential destinations of where I should try and play and where I could definitely get better,” Webb said.
“I heard great things about the Meteors program and thought it would be the ideal place for me to continue with my development.
“I also heard the NBL1 North would be a stronger overall level than the NBL1 Central and that helped sway my decision, particularly as I want to play against the top guards nationally to see how I stack up.
“Coach Joel (Khalu) has talked with me about my role in the team and my goal is to have a solid NBL1 rookie season and play my part in helping the team to compete for a championship.
“I’m also going to work as hard as I can to try and get an opportunity at the NBL level as well.”
It was a conversation and training session with Meteors’ coach Joel Khalu that convinced Webb to make the decision to join the side over interested clubs from NBL1 Central.
“Freddy is a quick, dynamic guard, who can defend multiple positions on the floor,” Khalu said.
“I really like how he goes about his business and it’s rare to find a player with his poise and maturity at age 21.”
The NT News revealed Mackay as the frontrunner to sign Webb in December last year, after Khalu watched the gifted playmaker train in Darwin.
“We had a conversation after the workout in which we discussed how he (Khalu) best believes my game would translate in the NBL1 North competition,” Webb exclusively told the NT News at the time.
Webb will form a formidable connection with Jerron Jamerson at the Meteors, last month the NT News revealing the star Tracy Village playmaker would also play for the Queensland outfit.
Webb and Jamerson are 2016 DBA Championship title winners with Ansett.
Jamerson also cannot wait to play under Khalu.
“I’m looking to take that next step and this move will give me a chance to fully showcase my abilities,” Jamerson told the NT News.
“The No.1 reason why I chose Mackay is my relationship with the coach.
“Joel believes in my ability and he’s going to play me without a leash.
“I feel like if I can play that way and with freedom I’ll be in the best position to help out the team.”
