Star jockey Jamie Kah to ride Queenslander Antino in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, also chasing Broadsiding ride in Cox Plate

Jockey Jamie Kah will be out to start the spring in the same way she finished the autumn in Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes but her manager is already working hard to secure her a lightweight Cox Plate ride.

Star jockey Jamie Kah’s manager might need to be the hardest worker in the game in the weeks leading to October’s Cox Plate.

SA-based Lachie Weekley earned the credit for getting Kah aboard the smart Queenslander Antino in Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield but there’s more work to do.

Kah would like to ride outstanding Godolphin colt Broadsiding in the Cox Plate at The Valley.

“It’s not locked in yet but my manager and (trainer) James (Cummings) have been talking about it,” Kah said.

Kah lived up to her part of the deal with the perfect Cox Plate audition, steering Broadsiding to win the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes from barrier 17 during the Brisbane Winter Carnival before James McDonald regained the ride on the three-year-old’s dominant victory in the Group 1 JJ Atkins in June.

However, the centuries-old weight-for-age scale could work in Kah’s favour. As a spring three-year-old, Broadsiding’s Cox Plate weight could be out of McDonald’s range.

“He’ll have 49kg in the Cox Plate,” Kah said.

“I’ve never done 49kg, even as an apprentice.

“I only rode at 52kg even then.”

Broadsiding is a $9 chance in Cox Plate betting but Kah’s immediate priority is working out a way to get the $6 chance Antino home ahead of multiple Group 1 winners Pride Of Jenni and Mr Brightside in the Memsie Stakes.

Kah said she didn’t know much about Antino before Weekley brought to her attention the possibility of riding the Tony Gollan-trained gelding.

Kah rode Antino to second in a jumpout against Pride Of Jenni at Cranbourne on August 19.

“I didn’t know a lot about this horse until the last few weeks,” Kah said.

“My manager was the one that got talking about him.

“I’m not one that looks too far forward, and I just really worry about what I’m riding on weekends, but after riding him in his trial last week, I’m excited to be riding him.”

A sharp gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday morning was Antino’s final preparation for his latest crack at a maiden Group 1 win at the venue where he was narrowly denied in the Toorak Handicap last spring.

“He’s going great. I didn’t do too much on him (in the gallop) because the track was quite firm out there,” Kah said.

“They’ve done a lot of work with him to get him really sound and spot on for this weekend, so hopefully it pays off.”
