The sad passing of legendary mare Black Caviar over the weekend has taken another tragic turn with the news her newborn foal, a colt by super stallion Snitzel, could not be saved.

The sad passing of legendary mare Black Caviar over the weekend took another tragic turn with the news her newborn foal could not be saved.

Black Caviar gave birth to a colt by Snitzel on Saturday morning before the all-time great sprinter was humanely euthanized after a short battle with laminitis.

As the racing world mourned the loss of Black Caviar, the mare’s owners released a statement on Monday morning revealing her foal had lost his life.

“The owners are saddened to advise that Black Caviar’s foal, a colt sired by Snitzel, passed away last night,’’ the statement said.

“He received around-the-clock, world-class veterinary care, but unfortunately could not be saved.

“The ownership group would like to thank the entire veterinary team who dedicated their time and efforts to caring for Black Caviar and her colt.

“The ownership would also like to acknowledge and thank the Australian public and the racing public globally for the many tributes to Black Caviar. She was much loved and admired.’’

Neil Werrett, one of Black Caviar’s owners, had earlier sent a text describing this as a “very emotional time and very sad”.

“Black Caviar changed our lives and we have so many great memories both on and off the track,’’ Werrett said.

“We are so grateful to be part of her life. You always dream of having a horse like her but to be part of a legendary horse was very special, and will continue to be very special.”

Black Caviar was a winning machine who conquered the world with her famous effort to win the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot before the late monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

Her English success was among 15 Group 1 wins that included two TJ Smith Stakes (2011, 2013), three Lightning Stakes (2011-12-13), two William Reid Stakes (2011, 2013) and the 2011 Newmarket Handicap under 58kg in a race record 1m 7.36s.

Black Caviar was crowned the world’s best sprinter on four occasions and Australian Racehorse of the Year three times.

The mighty mare is survived by eight of her foals, seven who have raced, with four winners.
