When the full-time siren sounds at Henson Park on Saturday, the high-flying action kicks off.
One of the staples of the annual Beer Footy Food Festival returns this weekend with some of the best wrestlers from PWA putting on a show in the ring.
“They can expect a combination of live theatre and live combat,” Soul of PWA champion Robbie Eagles said.
“People who like the drama, they’re going to get plenty of that. People who like the action, they’re going to get that.
“Get ready for some real Aussie biffo.”
The action complements the biggest day on the calendar in Marrickville, something Newtown Jets CEO Stu McCarthy said is beloved among the fans.
“From when it started, every year it’s grown bigger and bigger,” he said.
“There’s not another venue in Sydney like Henson Park. It’s the biggest natural amphitheatre.
“They (PWA) really get the crowd entertained and on board. The second question I get after the date is ‘will the wrestling be back?’. They’re hitting the right spot.”
As for former Jets who wouldn’t look out of place in the ring, McCarthy singled out a few big guns.
“You’d be hard-pressed to beat Steven Bowden,” he said.
“Tommy (Raudonikis) would’ve wrestled well above his weight. Most of that team would go well. They had some tough hombres in that side.”
There’s no shortage of star power in the ring, including a footy twist.
Melissa Averillo, the younger sister of Dolphins star Jake, is part of a card that will captivate the capacity crowd.
There’s a hot tip going around that the Jet Man himself could enter the ring once again, and is sure to be a fan favourite.
Two wrestlers that will bring down the boos are North Shore Wrestling’s Will Kiedis and Jack Osborne, who face off with Big Fudge and ‘Big Brother’ Billy Preston.
Kiedis promised his team will deliver the goods on Saturday, while also opening the door for the best player in the NRL to join their group.
“You’re going to see some big hits over on the field, but nothing is going to compare to what you see from North Shore Wrestling in the ring,” he said.
“Nathan Cleary, he’s from out west which I don’t particularly care for that sort of stuff, but he’s got some ticker.
“I think the two of us, combination wise against any Queenslanders out there, will get the job done.”
Osborne ensured the duo will be well and truly villains among the throngs on the hill, trashing the Bluebags.
“I wish we were performing at North Sydney Oval. That would be my ideal ground, but I’m sure the people at Henson Park will bring some good energy and hopefully they’re cheering for the right team,” Osborne said.
“I wouldn’t want to play for the Jets. I don’t think anyone wants to play for the Jets. I’d rather play for the Bears.”
While Eagles, one of PWA’s most recognisable stars, won’t be in action on Saturday, he is set to light it up against The Tuckman at the nearby Factory Theatre on Friday 1 August, headlining The Climb card.
