Buoyed by the experience of plying his trade all around the globe this year, David Micheluzzi has returned home to Australia intent on starting the new DP World Tour season in style in Brisbane.
Micheluzzi has played tournaments in countries including Italy, France, Germany, England, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Qatar, Singapore, India, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in an eye-opening maiden DP World Tour campaign.
The 28-year-old Victorian’s best effort was finishing in a tie for second in July’s BMW International Open in Munich, and overall he did more than enough to not only retain his card for the new season but also gain entry into some bigger tour events – including several Rolex Series tournaments – in 2025.
“I love the DP World Tour,” Micheluzzi said.
“This was the first time I’ve really gone to a lot of different countries and played different golf courses that I’ve never seen before.
“Next year most courses we’re playing are very similar to this year, so hopefully with a little bit of experience under my belt, I can have a better year.
“It will give me a bit of confidence to know where I’m going, probably less practice rounds because I’ve been there before, and also now actually having full status rather than being on the cut line of a few events.
“We get to play all around the world. It was so much fun.”
However, the chance to play at event home for the first time in eight months when he lines up at the Australian PGA at Royal Queensland this week also pleases Micheluzzi.
“I’m looking forward to playing back in `Oz’,” he said ahead of the season-opening DP World Tour event that is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia.
“It’s my fourth Australian PGA at Royal Queensland, so I know what to expect. I know it’s going to be hot, I know it’s going to be humid, you’ve got to work out angles there ¬ I’ve seen it all before.
“Hopefully that can help me to be a little bit more relaxed.”
Micheluzzi admitted he would need to improve to have a chance of conquering a field that included Cameron Smith, Jason Day, Cameron Davis, Lucas Herbert, Marc Leishman, Frenchman Victor Perez and defending champion Min Woo Lee.
“My game hasn’t been fantastic. My putting and short game has been really good all year, but the ball-striking just hasn’t been as sharp as I’d like it to be,” he said.
Micheluzzi’s most recent event was the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship earlier this month, where he shot 12-under to finish in a tie for 37th, 12 shots behind winner Paul Waring.
“It was one of the strongest fields I’ve ever played in,” he said reflecting on an event that featured Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Robert McIntyre, Joaquin Neimann and Adam Scott.
“Just sharing an elevator with Rory, talking about how his day was … to say that I’ve got a job next year on the DP World Tour, I’m pretty stoked.”
