Geelong forward Gary Rohan is expected to be available for selection after being withdrawn from the Cats line-up an hour before the club’s loss to Brisbane on Saturday.

Geelong said the enigmatic Cat failed a fitness test on his ankle at their captain’s run and is eyeing a return against Fremantle this weekend.

Defender Jed Bews is also in the mix to return from his knee injury which has sidelined him for the past three weeks, with a call to be made by the Cats later in the week.

Football boss Simon Lloyd described the progress of midfielder Cam Guthrie as “very exciting”, with the ball-winner to be integrated into minor training.

The dual best-and-fairest winner has been unsighted since round six due to his troublesome toe and would be a major boost for the Cats if he returns in the run home.

“Gary got very close to playing last week, he had a fitness test at the Gabba in our captain’s run and Gary has fully trained this week and expect him to be available for selection come Saturday against Freo,” Lloyd said.

“Cam’s volume of work has increased significantly. He is kicking, he will start to be involved in part training which is really exciting for Cam and the club and our members.

“Jed will fully train tomorrow, he has been doing a lot of cross training as well. The knee has progressed well but it will be a discussion that takes place between our medical team and our coaching team as to whether he is available or not this week

Brandon Parfitt shook off recent hand surgery with a strong return in the VFL, tallying 27 disposals, seven tackles and booting a goal, with Lloyd lauding his professionalism.

Prized draftee Jhye Clark has been coaching from the sidelines at VFL level as he recovers from a foot injury, with the young midfielder two sessions away from returning to running.

“Brandon returned from hand surgery and it was only a couple of weeks ago that he had the surgery. It is full credit to his professionalism, he played the full game against Brisbane in the VFL and was involved in the contest and got through well,” he said.

“Jhye is just a little bit behind Cam Guthrie at the moment, Jhye will start to run in two session’s time which is really positive and Jhye has also been coaching in the VFL, he has been on the sidelines which has been great.”
