TERRITORY basketball star Abby Cubillo has added another trophy to her ever-growing cabinet after taking part in the Canberra Capitals’ WNBL title win last week.

The 20-year-old has already achieved so much in her young career, from starting at point guard in the Australian Sapphires’ under-17s historic world title victory in 2016, to becoming the first born-and-raised Territorian to play in the WNBL.

Now with the Capitals winning back-to-back titles, Cubillo is a two-time national champion and will be raring for more.

The Tracy Village Jets product got a couple of minutes of court time against Southside in game one of the grand final series, and will be pushing for more game time next season in a bid to complete her dream of playing for the Opals.

“It’s still seems pretty surreal to me, honestly I’ve only played two seasons and we’ve won both,” Cubillo said.

“It was super awesome to get the opportunity to play in the finals series. To get there was every player’s dream at the start of their season and our hard work paid off.”

Cubillo has a host of great players to learn from in the squad including captain Kelsey Griffin, Marianna Tolo, Olivia Epoupa and Kia Nurse.

“They’ve all been brilliant and instil confidence in us younger players,” Cubillo said.

“I’ve been happy with my season and being around them has helped me learn a lot about myself as a player.

“For me it was super important to be passionate and work hard and take the opportunities that came my way. I wouldn’t be where I am now without taking those opportunities.” Basketball NT pathways manager Rod Tremlett was particularly pleased with the result, citing Cubillo as an inspiration for all aspiring Territorian basketballers.

“I’m really proud, this is an amazing achievement for her and shows all of her hard work has paid off,” he said. “She sacrificed a lot of time with her family to pursue this goal.

“She’s happy at the Caps and is still learning and developing there but its professional sport and she will be looking at all of her options ahead of next season.”
