International football returns to Suncorp Stadium in September with matches involving the Socceroos and the Matildas.

Socceroos return home after World Cup qualifier victory

Brisbane will be Australia’s home of international football in September, with both the Socceroos and Matildas to play at Suncorp Stadium.

The Socceroos will meet New Zealand on September 22 in their first match in Brisbane since a 1-1 draw with South Korea in front of almost 33,000 fans at the famous Milton venue on November 17, 2018.

And as part of the build-up to what will be the Socceroos’ farewell appearance to Australian fans before their November departure for the World Cup in Qatar, the Matildas will also play at Suncorp Stadium on September 3 against Canada.

The matches are expected to inject $10m into Brisbane’s economy.

“There has never been a more exciting time for Australian football, with our Socceroos recently qualifying for their fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup and the Matildas to contest the (2023) FIFA Women’s World Cup … right here in Australia (as co-hosts with New Zealand),” said Football Australia chief executive and proud Queenslander James Johnson.

“To be able to have both our senior national teams playing in the same city, at the same venue and during the same month is very special, and we know football fans from across Australia will converge on the Queensland capital to seize the opportunity to see Australia’s best footballers prepare for their respective FIFA World Cups.”

The Socceroos-All Whites match is part of a two-game series between Australia and New Zealand to celebrate the Socceroos’ centenary.

Australia’s first “A” international was played in 1922 against New Zealand in Dunedin.

The second game of the upcoming series will be played on September 25 at Auckland’s Eden Park.

The Matildas played in Queensland in April when they beat New Zealand 2-1 in Townsville, but their match against Canada – last year’s Tokyo Olympics gold medallists – will be their first game at Suncorp Stadium since a 4-1 win over South Korea on March 3, 2019.

Queensland Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Socceroos and the Matildas would bring “top quality international sport to the world’s best rectangular stadium”.

“We’re building a first-class line-up of major international sporting events for Queensland’s green and gold runway to (the) Brisbane 2032 (Olympics),” Hinchliffe said.

“It’s terrific to secure a September slot for the Socceroos and Matildas on Queensland’s runway of international sport.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said: “Football fever is taking over this September, exciting residents, driving visitation, and showcasing Brisbane nationally and globally as a world-class event city.

“These blockbuster matches will attract more than 25,000 visitors from across Queensland and

interstate to Brisbane who will stay in our hotels, enjoy Brisbane’s world-class dining destinations and support local businesses.”
