Huge street party to celebrate Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs’ Europa League win

Cheers for Aussie football manager Ange Postecoglou filled the air as he perched atop the Tottenham team bus and frenzied fans poured into the streets for the Spurs’ victory parade.

Ange Postecoglou is a hero.

Ecstatic Tottenham fans have waited 17 years for a piece of silverware and their thanks to the Australian manager was for all to see at the Spurs’ open-top bus victory parade in north London on Friday afternoon (Saturday morning AEST).

Supporters climbed onto the top of fish and chip and vape shops rooves, scaling buildings to get prime position for the parade that wiggled its way down Tottenham’s High Road, past the multimillion stadium that has brought them much pain during the Premier League season.

A sea of navy blue and white flags, scarfs and banners flooded the raucous crowd, as tens of thousands of supporters waited hours in the London sunshine to get pole position to welcome home their club heroes.

The sound was deafening as the victorious team were given a hometown welcome in the open-top bus victory parade, starring Postecoglou as he and the champion players meandered their way down Tottenham’s suburban streets and blue and white smoke filled the air.

All was forgotten when it came to the Australian coach’s future – many supporters hugged, some shed a tear as the team slowly made its way past the crowd that in some places 20-people deep, manned tightly by hundreds of security.

The Spurs are revelling in their historic victory that saw them defeat Manchester United 1-0 in the final at Bilbao in Spain this week and claim their first major trophy in 17 years.

The team arrived at London’s Stansted airport on Thursday afternoon (Friday AEST) with their giant silverware in tow and ahead of the massive street party in north London.

The parade, which featured a DJ and live music, was followed by players presenting the winning trophy to crowds who gathered in a staging area adjacent to Tottenham’s stadium, the most lavish football venue in the UK.

Despite the Spurs being victorious and the win now booking them a spot in next season’s Champions League, Postecoglou’s future as manager at the club still remains in doubt after a horror English Premier League season.

He proved the critics wrong after previously declaring he always wins trophies in his second season – which he did this week – but the Spurs sit 17th on the Premier League ladder and play their last match of the season on Sunday against Brighton.

Tottenham supporter Calum Stokes, 19, from Wales, visited the club on Thursday after the victory and said he wanted to see the Australian coach stay on next season.

“It’s hard to say, he’s got us a trophy so it’s almost as if you have just got to give him a chance now isn’t it,” he said.

But veteran supporter, Martin Lodge, 69, from London said Postecoglou’s tenure as team manager is up.

“No, he should still go,” he said.

“He’s useless isn’t he, he took us through some really rubbish results, he’s just not the man for the job anymore, yeah, he should go”.

However Tottenham legend and former striker Robbie Keane – who played for the club when they won a trophy 17 years ago – said Postecoglou must stay on at the club despite a horror English Premier League season.

“It’s an unbelievable moment for Spurs, Daniel Levy (chairman) and the manager, people asked me today do you think the manager will go, but how can you get rid of a manager who just won a European Cup?”, het told UK radio station talkSPORT.

“You need stability in the club and you’re not going to get that if you keep changing every couple of years, they need to build on this and build on momentum now”.
