NIGHTCLIFF Tigers’ outstanding Darwin Netball Premier League season has been recognised, with two key players being awarded for their efforts in a prelude to Friday’s grand final.

Star Tigers defender Katie Elmer claimed Darwin Netball Association (DNA) Player of the Year honours for her performances in the Nightcliff back lines this season.

Efforts from young talent Georgina Roy were also recognised as she was awarded the DNA Spirit Award in her inaugural premier league season.

Elmer, who has made a splash in the Territory netball scene since her move from Brisbane nearly two years ago, was humbled by the award.

“It’s a great achievement, it’s really special,” she told the NT News.

“I think the club support as well as my family, friends and team have given me the opportunity to get recognised for the award.”

Elmer said she owes a lot of her successes this year to Tigers coach Tanya Wines.

“Off court she’s like my second mum up here,” she laughed.

“She’s such a great coach, she tells me exactly how it is and that’s how you need to hear it.”

Roy, 15, has proven to be a bit of an enigma in the premier league this year for her rookie season after catching a few glimpses of premier league last season on the bench.

She was pleased to cement her position in her team.

“It’s exciting because I bench warmed a lot of the season last year, so it’s cool to earn my spot this year,” she said.

Roy also made the transition from a role in ring defence to the centre this year, something that has offered new challenges.

“I’ve improved on my attacking skills this season, but I have a great wing attack (Brittany Daly) helping me out.”
