TERRITORY basketball fans have plenty to look forward to with a week of world class NBL action to come their way with the 2022 NBL Blitz to be played in Darwin from September 16.
The South East Melbourne Phoenix will battle the Adelaide 36ers on opening night, starting a stretch of 15 games to be played at the Darwin Basketball Stadium until September 23.
The eight-day event will also feature a 3x3 Pro Hustle tournament at Darwin Waterfront, as the best in the country make their quality known to Top End fans.
Fans will have the chance to see all 10 NBL teams in action, including Bullets superstar Aron Baynes, Adelaide’s Antonius Cleveland and Robert Franks, while Darwin Salties star Makuach Maluach will feature for Melbourne United.
“I’m very excited that I get an opportunity to play for a club like Melbourne,” Maluach told the NT News.
“I’m also very happy that I get to play my first game as a United player in Darwin.
“This is a huge honour for the city and it’s great that young basketballers in NT will experience and watch high quality basketball.”
The winning team will be awarded the Loggins-Bruton Cup, while the tournament’s most outstanding player will take home the Ray Borner Medal.
Major Events Minister Paul Kirby said it was a huge win for the Territory to be able to watch some of the best basketballers in Darwin.
“The Territory has a wonderful basketball community and this event will help develop the game in the Territory and continue to highlight our passion at the sport’s highest level,” he said.
“This major international event will also boost visitor numbers to the Territory in the form of players, support crews and travelling fans, which is great news for our tourism and hospitality sectors.”
NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger credited the NT Government and NT Major Events for their support of the Blitz.
“We are looking forward to all the action and know our players, coaches and staff will get an amazing experience in Darwin,” he said.
Tickets will be available on August 19. For more details about the 2022 NBL Blitz visit www.nblblitz.com.au
