Darwin Dragons half Nigel Maher acknowledged the target on the back of the reigning premiers heading into the 44th premiership season of Darwin A-grade Rugby Union.
The Dragons, led by returning captain Drew Tobin, will be looking to defend their premiership victory but their four opponents (South Darwin, Casuarina, University and Palmerston) will be keen to upset the party.
First to face Darwin will be the South Darwin Rabbitohs, led by Brett Joyes who will be more than happy to exact their revenge for lasy year’s grand final defeat in the first round.
“We’re the target this season, everyone will be looking to knock us off. We just have to maintain and keep our A-grade game up,” Maher told the NT News.
“It’s been a good, tough pre-season. We’ve been getting some kilometres in our legs and getting ready for that grand final rematch.
“I think that first match might get quite heated and physical but I am looking forward to it.”
The Hahn Super Dry A-grade competition officially kicks off on Saturday with Casuarina and Pirates also set to face off.
The Swampdogs have dropped back to B-grade where they compete against Palmerston who have an A-grade bye in the opening weekend.
NTRU CEO Tamie Needham was pleased to welcome teams competing in all division of the sport from junior grade to senior.
“We are all aware that one of the many great things about rugby is the opportunity for anyone to play – men, women, girls and boys of all shapes and sizes,” Needham said.
“There’s a position on the field and a format of the game for everyone so we look forward to welcoming our returning players and encouraging new faces.”
