LEADING Darwin jockey Paul Shiers has been stood down from today’s Darwin Cup meet after failing a breath test this morning.
Shiers was booked to ride Carlton Mid Darwin Cup favourite Lightinthenite for trainer Gary Clarke at 5.40pm.
Victorian Jarrod Todd replaced Shiers on Valid in race one, which saluted the judges to hold off Umfazi.
Today was always going to be an emotional day for the Gary Clarke stable following the passing of regular rider Simone Montgomerie on this day last year, so for Shiers to be stood down at the start of the day would have surely come as a shock.
