Women’s T20 World Cup: Alyssa Healy and Tayla Vlaeminck injured in Australia’s win over Pakistan

There are fears Australian captain Alyssa Healy’s T20 World Cup campaign could be over after she suffered a painful injury during her side’s victory over Pakistan.

Australia’s bid for a historic fourth straight T20 World Cup triumph has been rocked by a foot injury to captain Alyssa Healy.

Healy retired hurt in her side’s nine-wicket demolition of Pakistan after suffering a right foot injury while running between wickets.

The star wicketkeeper-bat will undergo scans on Saturday which will determine whether she plays any further part in the tournament.

“Once we have more information based on her assessment and scans tomorrow, her availability for the remainder of the tournament will be clearer,” a statement from the team said.

Healy was 37 not out from 23 balls when she was forced to retire.

If she was ruled out of the tournament, it would likely mean Beth Mooney would take the gloves.

Mooney has only kept in four of her 104 T20 internationals.

Healy’s blow came only hours after luckless quick Tayla Vlaeminck dislocated her shoulder in the field.

The injury-prone fast bowler pulled off a brilliant boundary save four balls into Pakistan’s innings but was hurt in the process.

“Tayla dislocated her right shoulder while attempting to stop a boundary. Her shoulder is now relocated and the extent of the injury will be known following further assessment over the coming days,” a team statement said.

Ash Gardner was the hero with the ball in Vlaeminck’s absence, snaring 4-21 as Pakistan was skittled for 82 in 19.5 overs.

But post-match, her concern was for Healy and Vlaeminck.

“It’s obviously horrible seeing one of your mates (Vlaeminck) go down,” she said.

“Knowing Tay’s road to get back to here...to see someone like that go down with another injury, we all really felt for her.

“There was people that were emotional and I think that just shows the care that we have for our teammates, especially Tay.

“She’s worked so hard to get back here and she’s earned it. To see her go down like that, we had to regroup really quickly.”

Australia cruised to the target in 11 overs to sit top of Group A with three wins from as many matches.

Vice-captain Tahlia McGrath said: “It has been a big day for us and heartbroken for the two girls. We will find out in a few days.”

“The thing about this Australian side is how much depth we have got, captaincy-wise and wicketkeeper-wise, yeah, time to use it.” Australia have been clinical in their three matches in Group A to extend their victory run in the tournament since 2020.
