Usman Khawaja blasted a century in his first innings since returning from the Test series in Sri Lanka

The oldest batter in the Sheffield Shield made yet another century as a teen star was denied his debut.

Usman Khawaja reaffirmed his position as the best opening batsman in Australia with a stylish century upon immediate return to the Sheffield Shield.

Khawaja, 38, said he had no plan of finishing his career abruptly after he plundered a maiden double century in Sri Lanka last month.

The veteran opener continued his purple patch as the only player in Queensland’s top four to progress past the 20s on his way to 127.

Khawaja fought off in-form Tasmania seamers Gabe Bell, Kieran Elliott and Riley Meredith as well as fellow Test men Matt Kuhnemann and Beau Webster for 80 overs.

He was eventually dismissed by Bell during the arrival of the second new ball.

No. 5 Lachie Hearne helped Khawaja push the Bulls to 6-309 with 74 but was dismissed in the shadows of stumps.

Scott Boland, meanwhile, surged Victoria out a precarious position against South Australia on a green seamer at Junction Oval.

The Vics appeared a batsman short when they were dismissed for 285 after opting against debuting teenage star Oliver Peake.

Peake was added to the squad and in line for a debut but the Vics went with an extra quick as cover for managed captain Will Sutherland who was ruled out on Wednesday.

Victoria was sent in and recovered to 1-126 through Campbell Kelleway (79) and debutant Blake MacDonald (45) after losing experienced opener Marcus Harris for a duck.

But the Vics began to wobble again once both set batters were dismissed, losing 3-0 during a frantic second session.

Sam Harper (44) provided some resistance but Jordan Buckingham (4-70) and Henry Thornton (4-42) eventually forced their way through Victoria’s extended tail.

Boland wasted no time with the ball before stumps, claiming the wicket Conor McInerney in his first over before working over Henry Hunt shortly after.

Boland (2-11 off seven) had a brilliant battle with fellow Aussie squad member Nathan McSweeney who survived the difficult period.

McSweeney took 26 balls to get off the mark but it was well worth the wait as he punched a textbook on-drive for four.

South Australia finished 2-40, 245 behind Victoria, at stumps.

Cameron Bancroft (22) did not fire with the bat in Western Australia’s clash with New South Wales but he made an injury free return from his sickening BBL collision.

Bancroft crashed into Sydney Thunder teammate Daniel Sams when they both attacked a high ball against the Perth Scorchers in January.

Western Australia was 5-139, courtesy of a second-session counterpunch from Ashton Turner, at the tea break.
