Mitch Marsh to likely replace Green in Test team

Mitch Marsh is still coming down off his World Cup high, joking that his celebrations after Australia lifted the trophy were nearing “flog territory”.

Marsh described the team’s post-match hijinks as a “great couple of days”, that began in the changerooms and then continued with a group of about 30 people in Pat Cummins’ hotel room.

“So it was tight,” he told cricket.com.au’s Unplayable Podcast. “But that’s what you want.”

The team was then invited to a private residence the following day that had a barbecue and a pool.

“It was amazing,” Marsh said. “The celebrations were large and pretty much exactly what you’d expect.”

After returning to Australia, Marsh took some friends out on his boat to Rottnest Island – and didn’t hold back.

“I basically carried on the celebrations myself at Rottnest,” he said.

“I had the medal around my neck for the whole day, which I kind of thought may have been entering ‘flog territory’. If it wasn’t a World Cup, then probably!

“But everyone seemed to get around it. We had other people driving past on boats, yelling out. I certainly felt the love … I was swimming with it on – all sorts.

“There’s a bit of Pete Murray about it (the medal) – it’s seen better days – but it’s all part of the story.”

The next day Marsh received a message from coach Andrew McDonald.

“I had a couple of texts from Ronnie saying, ‘have you stopped yet?’ That was on Thursday. I said ‘just give me one more day, coach’,” Marsh said.

Ahead of the West Australian’s first hometown appearance since he struck his maiden Test ton in the 2017-18 Ashes, Marsh says he’s “very reluctant to be a part of the conversation” to replace David Warner atop the batting order.

During this year's Ashes series, Marsh claimed the number six position from Cameron Green and has now cemented himself as a valuable contributor to the Australian side in all three formats.

But he has no desire to budge from his lower-middle-order spot in the Test order.

“If Ron (McDonald, coach) is okay for me to try and get 150 before lunch on day one, I’ll put my hand up!”

He added: “There’s obviously been a little bit of chat about it and that’s all well and good – but I just got back into the team.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying my role at number six and that’s really all I’ll focus on.

“I’m happy for people to talk about it, but I don’t like being a part of the conversation because ultimately my job is to bat number six next week, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

He said something similar when he spoke to SEN WA: “I’m very reluctant to be a part of the conversation (to replace Warner).

“I understand that people have to talk about it and there’s obviously a lot of options for this team at the moment.

“But my sole focus is batting at number six, and I thoroughly enjoy that role. That’s all I’m focused on this week.”

Moving Marsh to the top of the order would allow Australia to bring Green back into the line-up. But Marsh says that – however the order is selected – Green will be back in the side soon and has a bright future ahead.

He said: “This little period for ‘Greeny’ is just a part of his story, that’s the way I see it.

“We all know that he’s got a huge future ahead of him. In any team that he plays in, he’s going to be vitally important, and there’s no doubt we’ll see him back in the team at some point in time in the near future.

“He’ll be back for sure.”
