Master blaster Tim David plunders record-breaking knock as Australia dominates West Indies in third T20I

In some trouble at 4-87 chasing more than 200, Australia’s towering master blaster Tim David unleashed hell on the West Indies, producing one of the most devastating knocks in cricket history.

Tim David produced one of the most brutal batting displays in international T20 history on Saturday to put Australian within reach of a Caribbean clean sweep.

David went from 15 from seven balls to 53 from 16, at one stage clearing the rope six times in 10 balls in a brutal display of power hitting.

That was just the start of his six-hitting barrage as David eclipsed Josh Inglis’ record for Australia’s fastest T20 international century (43 balls) with a 37-ball hundred.

Fittingly, David hit the winning runs to bring up his century as he powered Australia to a six-wicket victory chasing 4-214.

“It was just having a great time out in the middle...every opportunity we get to play out here we want to make the most of it,” David said.

“The pitch was good. Obviously (there was a) strong breeze, small boundaries. You’ve got to back your strengths. That’s probably best when I am attacking them.”

David added: “I have spent a lot of time practising my power hitting. To be honest now I am trying to focus on shot selection because that power game is always there and it’s what I build my game around.

“It’s important to make the right decisions at the right time and obviously if you bat for a length of balls without getting out then you get the chance to make big scores.”

The 69m boundaries at Basseterre’s Warner Park were never going to be big enough to tame the destructive David, who led Australia to victory with 23 balls remaining.

The 29-year-old cleared the rope with such ease that the St Kitts and Nevis crowd did more work than the West Indian fielders.

At one stage in his power-packed display, David rubbed salt into the West Indian wounds by turning down a single so he could continue his onslaught against a shell-shocked bowling attack.

And he did so using one of Caribbean legend Andre Russell’s bats in the game after the all-rounder bid farewell to international cricket.

David’s dominance largely consigned his Hobart Hurricanes teammate and BBL final hero Mitch Owen to the role of spectator at the opposite end after cameos from Glenn Maxwell (20), Mitch Marsh (22) and Josh Inglis (15) set the platform for Australia’s chase.

Owen was 18 when his 100-run partnership with David was achieved, highlighting the supremacy of the Singapore-born slugger.

The Australians were 4-92 from nine overs before David launched his matchwinning attack.

Three overs and 71 runs later, the third T20 match was effectively over.

David was dropped on 90 at deep mid-wicket by Brandon King, but otherwise made light work of what should have been a testing chase.

Earlier, West Indian skipper Shai Hope hit eight boundaries and cleared the rope six times during his maiden T20 International century, combining with Brandon King for a 125-run opening stand.

The Australians conceded 13 sixes and 17 fours as West Indies threatened to set a new mark for the highest total scored against Australia in a T20 international.

New Zealand’s 6-243 from 2018 against Australia looked destined to be eclipsed when Hope and King raced to 100 inside the first 10 overs.

But a game-changing spell of 0-21 from Sean Abbott – which included 14 dot balls – ensured the Australians would chase less than 11 runs an over at a ground where no total appeared insurmountable.

Nathan Ellis (1-37) showed his class in the death overs, while all-rounder Mitch Owen (1-23) claimed the crucial wicket of King for 62 from 36 balls.

Australia holds an unassiable 3-0 lead in the T20 series after clinching the Test series 3-0.
