IPL auction 2024: Every buy, every Aussie up for grabs

The IPL auction has delivered huge paydays for Australians with Travis Head, Pat Cummins and Mitch Starc cashing in on Australia’s World Cup win.

Welcome to our coverage of the 2024 IPL Auction, where a number of Aussie internationals and domestic stars will be vying for their shot in the cricket world’s largest domestic league.

11:55PM: NO AUSSIES SINCE AUCTION RESUMPTION

The Aussies are MIA as the auction continues, with Mitch Starc the last Australian to be sold.

Some big earners include Sameer Rizvi for ~$1.5m AUD to the Chennai Super Kings and Kumar Kushagra for ~$1,288,800 to the Delhi Capitals.

10:15PM: LONG BREAK POST STARC MADNESS

We’re still waiting for the auction to resume, giving us time to digest that record price Mitchell Starc sold for to the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Starc ended an eight-year hiatus from the IPL to enter the auction for next season, with estimations he could have made close to $15 million had he not avoided the competition in that period.

The Aussie quick instead focused on his Test career, but he has now received his huge payday.

9:15PM: STARC IGNITES BIDDING FRENZY

Mumbai and Delhi had gone head-to-head for the services of Mitch Starc, igniting a 10-minute battle for the Aussie quick.

And Kolkata have joined the action late, sparking plenty of laughs across the room, as the Gujarat Tigers join in the fun.

Eventually, Starc beats out his fellow Aussie quick Pat Cummins, landing at the Kolkata Knight Riders for ~$4,430,250 AUD, a new record.

9:00PM: PADDLE WAR!

We now turn our attention to the bowlers, and after some small bids and passes, Alzarri Joseph, who Aussie fans will remember from last summer from the West Indies is up.

Joseph gets to the Royal Challengers Bangalore for ~$2,058,500 AUD.

Indian veteran Umesh Yadav heads to the Gujarat Tigers, while Shivam Mavi is nabbed by Justin Langer’s Luckow Super Giants.

8:45PM: WHO WANTS TO KEEP A KEEPER?

English keeper Philip Salt was passed on, with South African Tristan Stubbs picked up by the Delhi Capitals for a small price.

Aussie World Cup winner Josh Inglis was another keeper snubbed, with keepers appearing not to be in high demand for the franchises.

The huge disconnect between the coin shelled out for IPL gigs and what they get for playing Test cricket can’t be good for the future of the latter.

8:15PM: BIDS, BIDS AND MORE BIDS

Kiwi Daryl Mitchell was another highly-sought prospect, with Ricky Ponting’s Delhi Capitals battling with the Punjab Kings, another long and drawn out affair.

The Super Kings also threw their hats into the ring late, helping Mitchell’s price soar. Eventually, Mitchell gets to Chennai for ~$2,506,000 AUD.

The action rolls onto English seamer Chris Woakes, subject to a battle between Kolakta and Punjab.

Woakes will play for the Kings, sold for ~$751,800 AUD.

7:45PM: CUMMINS SETS IPL RECORD

The Aussie skipper was subject to a hotly contested bidding war, but will suit up for the Hyderabad Sunrisers in the 2024 IPL, going for a massive price of ~$3,669,500 AUD, breaking the record for an IPL auction price.

The battle for his services took over ten minutes, wih both Bangalore and Chennai very much involved in the drawn out bidding process.

7:30PM: ALL-ROUNDERS ON THE BLOCK

Wanindu Hasaranga is the first all-rounder up for grabs, with the Sri Lankan joining Travis Head at the Sunrisers.

Kiwi star Rachin Ravindra made waves at the World Cup with his performances, and appears to have caught the eyes of bidders.

Ravindra will be a Chennai Super King, sold for ~$322,200 AUD.

Indian superstar is up next, and he will also be a Super King, for the price of ~$716,000 AUD

Rovman Powell gets a $10,000 investment portfolio from NAB and his own personal banker.

7:10PM: HEAD FINDS A HOME, SMITH SNUBBED

Australian assistant coach Daniel Vettori helped ensure Travis Head became an Indian Premier League millionaire with the Aussie World Cup hero becoming the subject of a bidding war at Tuesday night’s mini-auction in Dubai.

But there was no love for Steve Smith, with the former Aussie captain going unsold.

The South Australian was stuck in the middle of an arm-wrestle between Sunrisers Hyderabad, coached by Aussie assistant and former NZ captain Daniel Vettori, and the Chennai Super Kings.

After nip and tuck lasting several minutes, Vettori got his man for 6.8 crore rupees (1.216m AUD).

Head exploded into major IPL relevance on the back of an outstanding World Cup in which he returned from a broken hand to blitz New Zealand in Dharamsala before producing player of the match earning performances in the semi-final win over South Africa and the final over India in which his century hauled Australia to its sixth world title.

Capped batters were the first group of players to go under the auction, with big three Australian quicks Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood made to wait.

West Indian batter Rovman Powell was the first player to go under the hammer, sold to the Rajasthan Royals for 7.4 crore ($1.324m AUD), while Ricky Ponting’s Delhi Capitals purchased Harry Brook for four crore ($716,000).

South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw was passed in, as were Indians Karun Nair and Manish Pandey.

Despite having Vettori, Ponting and former Australian coach Justin Langer, now coach of the Lucknow Super Giants all in positions of influence, Smith did not attract a single bid, as occurred when he was up for grabs two years ago.

6:50PM: IPL ‘24 AUCTION IS UNDERWAY

We are off and running in Dubai, with all ten franchises in attendance to battle it out to get their hands on cricket’s biggest names.

The capped batters will be the first set of players available for auction.

Rovman Powell is the first player up for grabs, with Rajasthan and Kolkata going head to head for him.

Kolkata are VERY KEEN on him, not baulking whatsoever to bid back.

However, Rajasthan win the day, although the auctioneer was giving everyone ample chances.

Powell gets to the Royals for ~$1.39m AUD.

THE 21 AUSSIES CHASING SLICE OF IPL’S $47M-AUCTION PIE

Pat Cummins and his pace cartel headline the group of 21 Australians who will be anxiously awaiting the results of today’s IPL mini-auction (6:30pm AEDT).

Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc have all entered the auction with the maximum base price of INR 2 crore* ($358,000), as have Travis Head, Steve Smith, Josh Inglis and Sean Abbott.

At the other end of the base-price spectrum are Jake Fraser McGurk and bolter Will Salzmann, both listed at a base price of $36,000.
Not all 21 Australians entered in the auction will finish the night happy, with 119 foreign players looking to fill the remaining 30 slots available to internationals – 50 of the 80 international slots were filled in the retention round by the 10 teams.

However, those that do find a home will be richly rewarded, with $47.2 million available to the 10 teams to fill the remainder of their squads.

They will join the 10 other Australians already locked in to play in this season’s IPL. Among that group, six are on deals worth more than $1m a season.

Cameron Green ($3.15m) and Glenn Maxwell ($2m) are the biggest earners in that group, and remarkably they’re both part of a Royal Challengers Bangalore squad that also features the high-earning Virat Kohli.

Of the eight teams, Matthew Wade’s Gujarat Titans have the most money to splash, with $6.8m of their transfer kitty still available. Coached by Justin Langer, the Super Giants have the least money left to spend with $2.36m.

Langer is one of three Australians coaching in this season’s IPL, with Ricky Ponting in charge of the Mumbai Indians ($3.18m remaining) and Trevor Bayliss with the Punjab Kings ($5.22m).
