Spotlight on Maxwell’s relationship with alcohol after being hospitalised after Six and Out concert in Adelaide

Cricket Australia is seeking more information after Glenn Maxwell was reportedly hospitalised after a night out in Adelaide, but denies it’s why he’ll miss the next ODI series.

Cricket Australia is seeking more information after revelations Glenn Maxwell was hospitalised following a drunken night out in Adelaide last week.

This masthead understands Maxwell was out drinking at the Six and Out concert when he passed out in an intoxicated state and an ambulance was called.

Australian and West Indian Test players were also in attendance at music venue The Gov to watch Brett Lee and the other ex-cricket greats who front Six and Out – however, it’s understood Maxwell came separately and did not arrive or leave in the same group, having been at a golf event in Adelaide that day.

Cricket Australia deny Maxwell is under investigation for his actions, which did not involve altercations with other players or members of the public, or any misbehaviour of that kind.

Those close to Maxwell say simply, a few beers in the sun and dehydration had caught up with him and he was released from hospital a couple of hours after arriving by ambulance.

However, a spotlight has been shone on the 35 year-old’s overall relationship and judgement with alcohol.

Multiple sources connected with the Australian team have told this masthead that Maxwell’s judgement with alcohol has been an issue in team environments for several years and that this incident should serve as a sobering wake-up call.

Maxwell was earlier on Monday “managed” out of Australia’s upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, however, Cricket Australia insists this has nothing to do with the drunken incident and was a pre-determined decision.

Some at CA were not aware of Maxwell’s hospitalisation until Monday afternoon, after it had been announced Jake Fraser-McGurk was replacing Maxwell in the ODI squad.

However, it’s understood Maxwell’s management did notify CA figures of what had occurred on Saturday.

“Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide at the weekend and is seeking further information,” CA said in a statement.

“It is not related to him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision that was made following the BBL and based on his individual management plan.

“Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series.

“No further comment will be made at this time.”

Maxwell concussed himself during the recent ODI World Cup in India, after falling off the back of a golf cart.

Sources close to the team insist that while Maxwell had consumed a couple of beers, he was not intoxicated when the fall occurred.

However, there are other sources who counter that version of events.

At a 50th birthday party for his best mate 12 months ago, Maxwell suffered a severe broken leg as the result of a mishap.

Again, sources are adamant the fall happened early in the night and Maxwell was not intoxicated.

But even if the golf cart incident and the 50th birthday were unlucky coincidences, there is a general feeling around Australian cricket that CA needs to more generally examine Maxwell’s judgement around alcohol overall.

Even sources close to Maxwell concede he needs to take heed of his trip to hospital and make changes with elements of his behaviour.

There is no suggestion that Maxwell’s behaviour affected other patrons at the Adelaide venue.

Australian players were pictured with Six and Out band members including Lee after the show, the final gig in the popular band’s successful comeback tour.
