Battered Maxwell refuses to give in

The cricket world has been left in disbelief after Glenn Maxwell delivered an innings for the ages.

Maxwell torched the Afghanistan bowlers to all parts of Wankhede Stadium as he put Australia on his back and carried them into the World Cup semi-finals.

The outrageous display saw him finish unbeaten on 201 as he plundered 21 fours and 10 sixes to give Australia their sixth straight win.

While the plaudits for his out of this world innings came flooding in, it was his heroics to fight off violent cramps that took his display to a whole new level.

The Aussie star’s movement was severely restricted as he relied on sheer willow power to bludgeon the white ball to the boundary.

He was left hobbling through at the end of overs for a single to keep strike and continue his onslaught.

“Horrific, I feel shocking,” Maxwell said after his innings. “It was quite hot when we were fielding, I haven’t done a whole lot of high intensity exercise in the heat. It got a hold of me today, I was lucky to stick it out until the end.”

But nothing was going to slow him down as he fought off his own body trying to slow him down by lifting the Aussies to victory.

The absurd innings left the cricket world in sheer disbelief with those watching on labelling it a moment in time never to be forgotten.

English captain Ben Stokes shared a comment on X that included stunned-face emojis, writing: “My goodness Maxi”.

Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar wrote: “From Max pressure to Max performance! This has been the best ODI knock I’ve seen in my life.”

The list of records Maxwell broke on Wednesday morning is insane:

— The highest score in an ODI run chase

— Highest score at No.5 or lower

— First ever 200-run score in run chase

— Highest score for an Australian batter in an ODI

— Second Fastest 200 in an ODI

Maxwell ended the match in style with nearly three overs to spare when he slammed Mujeeb for another six.

The 35-year-old Maxwell’s highest one-day international score was just his fourth century in 136 matches at this level, but second of the tournament after he scored the fastest hundred in men’s World Cup history, off just 40 balls, against the Netherlands.
