James Pattinson takes to Instagram after suspension

James Pattinson has posted a provocative social media video as a silent whinge over his one-match ban for throwing the ball at a batsman.

The Victorian firebrand fast bowler was fined 100 per cent of his match fee and slapped with a suspension for pelting a ball at NSW’s Daniel Hughes and striking him on the foot, when the batsman was standing stationary in his crease.

Pattinson posted a video on his Instagram account on Thursday night featuring clips of two other instances in the Sheffield Shield where other bowlers had committed the same offence – and presumably not been suspended.

One of the videos featured Test star Marnus Labuschagne throwing the ball back towards a batsman during a match for Queensland.

Pattinson didn’t post any comment or audio with the video, but it appeared to be a silent protest to Cricket Australia administrators over his treatment by law enforcers.

The irony is rain is forecast in Melbourne on Friday for the one-day match against NSW, meaning the star quick may be suspended without technically missing a match.

Pattinson was found guilty of a level 2 offence under the game’s code of conduct for “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match.”

In late 2019, Pattinson was banned from the first Test of the summer after making a homophobic slur in a Sheffield Shield match.

The big right-armer was set to be a key part of Australia’s Ashes summer before announcing his shock retirement from Test cricket last month.

Meanwhile,  England captain Joe Root last night acknowledged the racism scandal gripping his club Yorkshire.

Root described racism as “simply intolerable” and vowed to support Yorkshire in cleaning up its act.

“We have to find a way to move forward and make sure this never happens again,” said Root.

“In my opinion, this is a societal issue and needs addressing further afield than just cricket.”

‘Pretty painful’ - Hurt batter responds after quick banned

Victorian fast bowler James Pattinson has been fined and suspended after a fiery incident during his team’s Sheffield Shield win over NSW at the MCG this week.

After being locked in a battle with dogged NSW batsman Daniel Hughes, Pattinson hurled a wayward throw at the stumps that struck Hughes on the foot.

The NSW opener limped off in pain, threw his bat away and then took his helmet off after having a “few words: with Pattinson as he apologised.

Pattinson, who was playing his first game for the season, was spoken to by the umpires and has subsequently been fined 100 per cent of his match fee and suspended for one game.

He was charged and found guilty under Article 2.7 of the Code for “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match”.

Pattinson won’t play for Victoria in a one-day clash with NSW at the MCG on Friday.

Victorian captain Peter Handscomb said Pattinson was fired up after a series of near misses bowling to Hughes.

“He’s a fiery boy, old Patto,” Handscomb said after the game.

“We had a little quiet chat, the umpires and myself, just to see what they were thinking, but we’ll move on.”

Social media reacted, labelling Pattinson’s act as “absolute f-grade rubbish” and “disgraceful”.

Hughes was locked in a fierce battle with Pattinson, who had the left-hander caught at short leg in the opening session, only to be denied his wicket for bowling a no-ball.

Pattinson bowled with the ferocity that could have put every English batsman on the back foot during the Ashes if he hadn’t announced his international retirement.

After yet another ball screamed past Hughes’ outside edge in the final session, Pattinson screamed “How many times?” as frustration grew.

Hughes, who batted all day and was 89 not out when Victorian claimed the final NSW wicket in a 175-run win, said he and Pattinson shared a beer after the game to talk about the incident, which left him “pretty pissed off” at the time.

“It was pretty painful and there were a few words had,” he told Yahoo Sports.

“What I said back to him can‘t be repeated but what he said to me probably can’t be repeated either.

“It was a pretty intense, heated battle all day. The four quicks they had hit the wicket hard and it was a fiery encounter.

“They got frustrated with a few plays and misses and edges that didn’t go to hand but I wasn’t going for a run or anything (when hit by Pattinson). I was just standing my ground in my crease and he let loose.

““We talked about it over a beer in the change-rooms. It was all good in the end.”
