‘Didn’t want him’: Candice Warner takes blowtorch to Cricket Australia

Candice Warner has delivered a bombshell remark on national television while talking about her husband’s illustrious cricket career.

'Well and truly done...': Warner confirms Aussie retirement plan

Candice Warner has opened up on her husband’s illustrious career and believes he would have been better off in a different era.

The 37-year-old David hung up the bat and gloves from Test and ODI cricket this year, while hoping for one last hurrah at the T20 World Cup in June.

His final game in Australian colours on Australian soil came in mid-February when the West Indies won the third and final T20 game of the series.

While the left-handed opener has been enjoying life away from the spotlight, Candice has thrust herself into the thick of it.

The former ironwoman opened up on life post-retirement before appearing on Channel 10’s latest season of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!

On Tuesday night’s episode, Candice opened up on her husband’s career and turned a blow torch on Cricket Australia’s administration.

“He’s always had these people who’ve had a misconception of him,” Candice said.

“But when you actually get to know him, he’s the most kindest, generous person. I think he

would have been better off playing in a different era.”

Paralympian Ellie Cole asks Candice: “Are you saying like an era without as much media attention?”

Candice responds: “Well in an era where people aren’t as selfish. You know, where it’s more about other players protecting the players.”

Skye Wheatley jumps in: “Oh my gosh are you saying that’s how he’s been burnt … by his teammates?”

It’s then that Candice drops the bombshell, not only on David’s former teammates but on the administration within Cricket Australia.

Candice reveals details about husband David's career

“At times 100 per cent. But it’s not just them. It’s the administration,” Candice says.

“Look the current coaching staff are just, have been brilliant. Like they, a very different style of coaching and everything like that.

“But throughout his career the administration definitely, basically didn’t want him there. Because he’s different, he doesn’t typically fit the mould of a cricket player.”

AFL legend Peter Daicos was stunned by the revelation from Candice and labelled it “silly”.

“That’s silly, that’s what made him the player he is. Your personality is you.”

Candice says that mould works, until it goes against the brand being built by the governing body.

“They love that until it doesn’t suit their brand,” she says.

In a piece-to-camera Candice drops one final bombshell: “There’s been plenty of people that have burnt myself and David along the way and it happens to so many people, and it wouldn’t be right for me to name them individually, but those people know who they are.”

It’s not the first time this year Candice has spoken about those who have, in the eyes of her, done wrong by the couple.

In an interview on the Backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns podcast, Candice said she’s kept a list of all the people who have delivered harsh criticism towards her husband.

“There was always that level of someone wanting him to fail,” she said.

“David didn’t care so much about what was written about him, but I did and I still do because I’m so protective of him.

“I’ve got a little list of all the people that have said some really horrible things and there’s been times where I can’t bite my tongue.

“It was just a massive pile-on because it was easy and you could get a headline.”
