As he prepares to make his debut in the commentary box, David Warner has opened up on his Australian coaching aspirations, but admits it could a decade before he could takeover.

David Warner wants to take you inside the mind of Marnus Labuschagne. He wants to give you an insight into what captain Pat Cummins is thinking as he takes the new ball.

He also wouldn’t mind coaching an Australian team one day – Cummins suggested he would make a great coach this week – but laughs as he concedes he might need to wait a decade for Cricket Australia to turnover its staff.

“I think maybe people at Cricket Australia want me to go away for a little bit and then come back in five to 10 years time when they’re probably gone,” he told Sunday Sesh.

In the meantime, Warner is about to launch his career as a commentator with Fox Cricket over the summer. It all starts on Monday in Melbourne with an ODI clash between Australia and Pakistan.

Warner promises to be riveting television. He has been a lightning rod for controversy at times during his playing career and he has vowed to tell it like it is as he steps into the commentary box.

If it means upsetting some former teammates, that comes with the territory. He is happy to take their calls if they have an issue.

“From my perspective, I always want to make sure that people understand that nothing is personal,” Warner said.

“If I ever be critical or anything of someone, I’ll always speak to them beforehand or if they want to have a chat with me about some comments, they’ve got my number. They can call me up.”

As for the criticism that inevitably comes from the public, Warner insists he is ready for it.

“It doesn’t faze me to be honest,” he said.

“You’re going to get people to slag you off all the time and it is what it is. It comes with being on TV. That’s the same as the game of cricket.

“They’re either going to like you on the field or they’re not going to like you. But at the end of the day people are entitled to their opinion.

“I won’t take too much notice of negative comments, that’s for sure.”

Warner brings plenty of currency to the role given he is an active player – he is still turning out for the Sydney Thunder and may yet captain the team after having his ban over the Sandpapergate scandal lifted

Coaching is now also open to him and it is certainly on his radar.

“Yeah, coaching definitely,” he said.

“First and foremost it’s about keeping in the game through this perspective. That way if the opportunity arises down the track … you actually understand the players that are around.

“Coaching is also timing.”
