Hobart Hurricanes coach Jeff Vaughan is “confident” explosive batter Tim David will sign a new deal with the Big Bash Franchise.

David’s signature remains one of the most sought after recruits because he was not included in the Hurricanes 10-player retained list.

Under a plan unveiled in late 2024, clubs were able to lock in no more than 10 players for next season with those unsigned becoming free agents.

This masthead has previously reported the Melbourne Stars had courted the Aussie T20 international but it’s expected he will remain in purple beyond Monday’s grand final.

“I’m confident he will continue his connection with the people of Tasmania,” Vaughan said.

“I just know Tim loves Tasmania. And he’s very grateful for his opportunity to play for the Hurricanes.

“He’s shared we’re his first professional franchise. He loves being down here for six weeks every Christmas time.

“I just know Tim is very connected to his organisation and to our playing cohort.”

The Hurricanes have had plenty to celebrate in recent weeks after earning the right to host the final as they chase their first BBL title, having previously lost two deciders.

Vaughan’s side has also been future proofed with captain Nathan Ellis, Ben McDermott, Mitch Owen and Riley Meredith all signing three-year deals.

It has some supporters eyeing a potential dynasty if they are to succeed next week.

“Hopefully we can keep the group together to have sustained success,” Vaughan said.

“Part of the plan, win, lose or draw is to create a group that learns to play together, learns to win together.

“And stay together for a long period of time. Our strategy is to develop a group but then hold this group together.

“Very confident we’ll be able to continue that group evolution.”

From January 28, the morning after the final, players will be free to move during a 10-day movement window where trades can also occur.

Vaughan said he wasn’t concerned about the timing.

“It’s something you’re always doing anyway. We’re always looking at our list,” he said.

“We’re always forward planning. While we live in the moment, part of our role is to always have a lens to the future.

“We’re always looking at the evolution of our team.”
