Australian cricket contract news: Mitchell Marsh set to become big winner after monster 2023

When Australia’s latest contract list is handed out, Mitchell Marsh is set to be handed an astonishing pay rise – reward for his remarkable form at the World Cup and Ashes.

Mitchell Marsh is tracking to become Australia’s next big mover on its contract list as selectors contemplate giving him the steering wheel for the T20 World Cup.

If Marsh can continue his stunning form since being recalled in the Ashes – he has averaged 67 in five Tests – he is likely to be ranked on the cusp of Australia’s top five on their 20-plus player contract list in the next revision of player contracts.

That sort of recognition seemed unthinkable when his West Australian teammate Cameron Green had a seemingly immovable presence in the Test team, meaning Marsh’s place in the side looked gone for good.

It is understood Marsh is positioned in the middle of Australia’s contract list but could expect a major pay rise of between $500,000 to $800,000 per year if he continues his current form.

The contract ranking is done on a weighting system where players get a red and white ball ranking which is combined and Marsh would be high in both given he is an important player in all three national teams.

The increase would be a reward for the multimillion-dollar sacrifices he made at various stages of his career when he prioritised his Test career ahead of IPL money. Initially, this gamble drew no meaningful rewards but he is making up for lost time.

Marsh is the frontline contender to skipper Australia in June’s T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean.

He recently led Australia in a white ball series against South Africa and it is likely if he does not get the role it will go to Travis Head.

At 32 Marsh may only have a few more years left at the top level but he is seen as a key man in the looming transition between generations.

His genial nature and the fact he is one of the most popular players with his teammates are qualities which can help bond the team in tougher times ahead in a side in which Marnus Labuschagne, at 29, is the youngest player in the team.

Though he was being touted as a chance of becoming Australia’s new opener to replace the retiring David Warner, Marsh wants to stay down the list and the selectors will honour his wish.
