Australia v Bangladesh, T20 Cricket World Cup 2024 live: Pat Cummins claims a hat-trick, Starc creates World Cup history in DLS win for Aussies

Pat Cummins has taken a hat-trick, becoming the seventh man to do so in World Cups. While Mitchell Starc trumped all bowlers at World Cups with an earlier dismissal in a match to be later hampered by rain.

Cummins becomes just 2nd Aussie to claim a T20 World Cup Hat-trick!

Pat Cummins (3-29) took only the second hat-trick ever by an Australian in T20 World Cups to combine with David Warner in burying Bangladesh in Antigua.

Warner’s epic farewell lap in international cricket continued with another scintillating 53 not out off 35 balls as rain frustratingly impacted what would have otherwise been a clinical march to victory for Australia in their first Super 8s clash.

In the end Australia was declared 28-run winners on Duckworth Lewis at the ridiculously late hour of 12.27am local time.

Cummins was the pick of a brilliant bowling performance which strangled Bangladesh to just 8-140 on a good batting wicket.

Brett Lee was the only previous World Cup hat-trick taker for Australia way back in 2007, also against Bangladesh, before hat-trick Patrick joined one of his boyhood heroes in the record books.

The Australian superstar barely celebrated his hat-trick but it was yet another chapter in his extraordinary record as an all-format match-winner.

First-over assassin Mitchell Starc (1-21) got the ball rolling for Australia and eclipsed Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga as the greatest ever World Cup wicket-taker across ODIs and T20s, before Josh Hazlewood delivered a second-over maiden to set the tone for what was another statement match for Mitchell Marsh’s team.

Adam Zampa (2-24) was also at his brilliant best and once again busted the match open for Australia in the middle-overs.

Then the dynamic duo of Warner and Travis Head (31 off 21) opened the shoulders to have Australia flying at 0-59 after the six-over powerplay.

At the same point in the match, Bangladesh was struggling at 1-39.

The only momentary wobble for Australia was they lost 2-11 in the three overs following a rain delay which immediately came on after the power play.

But Warner (53 not out) and Glenn Maxwell (14 not out off six) got the steam train back on course and Australia was 2-100 after 11.2 overs when the heaviest shower of the night stopped the fight for good.

Australia was 28 runs ahead on Duckworth Lewis and ran out deserved winners.

It was a crucial win for Australia because their two toughest Super 8s matches are still to come.

They play Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan on arguably the toughest pitch of the tournament on Sunday morning AEST and then take on the might of India in the early hours of Tuesday morning AEST.

After taking care of Bangladesh, one more win should see Australia into the semi-finals.

02:23PM: And the match has been called due to persistent rain. Australia win by 28 runs on DLS (Duckworth Lewis Stern). Finishing 2/100 after 11.2 overs.

02:16PM: Cut off for a match will be 12.46am local time, which will be 2.46pm on the Australian east coast.

02:05PM: David Warner has continued his dam-busting start to the Twenty20 World Cup, smashing 52 not out off 34 as rain continues to interrupt Australia’s march to victory against Bangladesh.

Australia is 2-100 after 11.2 overs meaning the side is on target to gobble up Bangladesh’s 8-140 even if rain ruins the rest of the contest.

The Australians had a wobble after the previous rain delay, losing 2-11 in the three overs after the power play.

But Warner and Glenn Maxwell (14 not out off 6) have put Australia 28 runs ahead of the par score on DLS.

01:47PM: Mitchell Marsh has followed Travis Head in quick succession with the Bangladesh Tigers roaring back into their Super 8s clash against Australia.

The Aussies are suddenly 2-69 after nine overs, having been flying at 0-59 after the six-over powerplay.

A lengthy rain delay has significantly halted Australia’s momentum who were flying with David Warner and Head at the crease.

Now the pressure is on the out of sorts Glenn Maxwell to fire-up with his first knock-out performance of the tournament.

Marsh was unlucky to be given out lbw, with the ball shown to be just hitting leg on umpire’s call on his review.

01:43PM: Travis Head has fallen the first wicket after a lengthy rain delay to give Bangladesh its first sniff of a one-sided Super 8s clash against Australia.

Australia is 1-66 after eight overs, a positive comeback given Head and David Warner had powered their side to 0-59 at the end of the power play.

The rain delay has definitely slowed Australia’s momentum, but Bangladesh are protecting a skinny total of 8-140.

Head was eventually bowled 31 off 21, having previously survived a couple of chop-on scares.

Warner is again flying with 35 off 25, and Australia would dearly love captain Mitchell Marsh to hit his straps with a knock-out innings.

01:36PM: Travis Head departs for 31 from 21 balls bowled by Rishad Hossein.

01:20PM: Rain in Antigua has halted play with Australia cruising at 0/64, after 6.2 overs, chasing 141 to win.

01:10PM: Australia is absolutely flying towards an emphatic Super 8s victory over Bangladesh in their pursuit of a Triple Crown of World Cups.

Dynamic duo David Warner (28 off 17) and Travis Head (30 off 19) have destroyed Bangladesh in the power play to be 0-59 after the first six overs.

Bangladesh was struggling at 1-39 at the same point of the match as they stuttered their way to a total of 8-140.

The covers have come onto the field due to another shower, but even if the match becomes rain affected, Australia has put themselves in the box seat to win going at virtually 10 an over.

Warner was dropped in just the second over of the match when he only had one boundary up and has punished Bangladesh for the slip-up.

Both men have given Bangladesh a lesson in power hitting.

Earlier, Pat Cummins took a brilliant hat-trick - just the second ever by an Australian in T20 World Cups to set up the match.

12:22PM: Cummins took only the second hat-trick ever by an Australian in T20 World Cups with Bangladesh setting Mitchell Marsh’s team 141 to win the first Super 8s match in Antigua.

Bangladesh will probably take their 8-140 given how sluggish they were for much of the innings.

The timid Tigers didn’t apply their power game and have left themselves short of the average winning score in Antigua which is 154.

Australia needs seven an over to chalk a crucial win ahead of tough match-ups against Afghanistan and India.

As Cummins bowled the last delivery of the innings, a shower came through and the covers are on at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Time will tell whether the Duckworth Lewis system comes into play with the chase.

Cummins is just the seventh man to take a hat-trick in T20 World Cups.

Adam Zampa 2-24 was also excellent and also claimed two catches. Zampa has 11 wickets for the tournament.

12:11PM: Bangladesh finish at 8/140 setting Australia 141 for victory in the Super Eights.

12:06PM: Cummins gives a very low-key celebration after bowling his first victim and then having the next two caught in the deep either side of the 18th and 20th over.

12:02PM: Pat Cummins will be on a hat-trick if captain Mitchell Marsh elects to go with him for the final over of the innings. The Test supremo struck for back-to-back wickets with the final two balls of the 18th over to leave Bangladesh reeling at 7-122.

Bangladesh are going to need two massive final overs to lift themselves to a competitive total on what looks a good wicket.

With the exception of a Marcus Stoinis over that went for 14, Australia has put the clamps on Bangladesh for the entire innings after Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first.

11:56AM: Marcus Stoinis has continued his outstanding World Cup as Australia suffocate Bangladesh in the first Super 8s game.

It took Bangladesh until the 16th over to get past the 100-run mark, despite only being four wickets down.

Stoinis then knocked over the fifth with the first ball of the 17th over, getting Bangladesh batsman Shakib Al Hasan skied one straight up in the air and Stoinis completed a comfortable caught and bowled.

However, Bangladesh finally found some momentum later in the over with Towhid Hridoy slaughtering two desperately needed sixes in successive balls.

Previous to that, Bangladesh had gone nearly 50 balls without a boundary.

11:40AM:

Adam Zampa has removed Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 41 off 35 overs to confirm Australia’s position of strength in their first World Cup Super 8s clash in Antigua.

Zampa now has two wickets for the match and 11 for the tournament as he continues to assert himself as Australia’s most important player.Bangladesh is 4-84 after 13 overs on what looks a decent batting wicket and they will need to really surge in the back end to post a competitive total.

Australia’s bowlers have been very effective and captain Mitchell Marsh has marshalled them expertly.

Hossain Shanto elected not to review his lbw dismissal and walked straight off.

Zampa has an uncanny knack of striking when Australia most need him in the middle overs and he’s done it yet again when it matters.

11:25AM:

Glenn Maxwell has joined Adam Zampa in striking a crucial double blow against Bangladesh in their first World Cup Super 8s clash in Antigua. Bangladesh is struggling at 3-67 after 10 overs, thanks to Australia dominating the power play and the twin spin options answering the call of captain Mitchell Marsh.

Maxwell bowled an excellent first up over, capped off by a last ball wicket.Rishad Hossain skied one up off just his fourth ball faced, and Zampa completed a tricky catch at fly slip.

Zampa the previous over once again proved the middle-overs breakthrough man for Australia, striking in the ninth over to leave Bangladesh in a sluggish position.

Bangladesh struggled to get away from Australia in the power play, but Litton Das and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto had put together a handy 50-run partnership that was getting the Tigers somewhere.

But Zampa suffocated Litton and then bowled him for a 16 off 24 which reflected Bangladesh’s struggles in the power play where they were 1-39 after six overs.Zampa (10) is flying up the charts of top wicket takers for the tournament, once again - having dominated last year’s ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup - both won by Australia.

11:20AM: Adam Zampa has once again proven the middle-overs breakthrough man for Australia, striking in the ninth over to leave Bangladesh in a sluggish position.

11:09AM: A Josh Hazlewood maiden in the second over, and two tight overs from Starc have strangled Bangladesh on what looks a good batting wicket, with the Tigers 1-39 after the first six overs.

Australia got a little looser towards the end of the power play, with Starc’s third over going for 10 and Pat Cummins’ first over going for 12.

However, Australia will be happy with their start, and the key to it was yet another Starc first-over special.

10:34AM: First-over specialist Mitchell Starc has done it once again.

The greatest ever first over assassin in the history of white ball cricket - and possibly cricket altogether - has dismissed Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan for a duck in Antigua.

Starc has struck so many times in the first over of big matches that there must be a fear factor that comes into play for batsmen.

Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first, and are instantly on the front foot with the Tigers 1-0.

10:17AM: Australia has won the toss and elected to bowl first in their Super 8s showdown against Bangladesh. Captain Mitchell Marsh has confirmed he has backed in the three big quicks Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc for the first match of what is the business end of the World Cup.

The toss was delayed by some light rain and still the groundsmen are hovering just off the centre square with the covers in case they are needed to sprint into action.

Australia will like their chances on an Antigua pitch (electing to bowl first) which has hosted big scores so far this tournament.

However, there have been signs of spin in the last couple of matches, bringing Bangladesh into the match.Australia has resisted playing second spinner Ashton Agar even though South Africa brought in another spinner for their clash in Antigua against the USA the previous day.

The big three quicks did the job for Australia in the 2021 T20 World Cup and last year in the ODI World Cup in India, and are being backed in again for this title tilt in the West Indies.

10:00AM: The covers are coming onto the field in Antigua, bringing about the possibility Australia’s Super 8s clash against Bangladesh might be delayed.

All indications were that Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will complement Adam Zampa as the Australian attack, however, there is yet to be a toss and things could change depending on the length of the delay.

Australia will like their chances against Bangladesh on this batter friendly surface, however there have been signs in recent matches that the Antigua deck is starting to take turn.

The rain is falling quite hard for now and has been a factor in other Antiguan matches, most notably England’s last group game against Namibia.

'The greatest you'll see' Marnus takes incredible catch

Scotland game distant memory

A sloppy fielding effort in the final pool game at the T20 World Cup was just an off night according to Australian captain Mitch Marsh who has backed his players to stand up in the big moments, declaring “they all start now”.

The Aussies only just got over the line against minnows Scotland to set up a Super Eight showdown with Bangladesh on Friday, Marsh dropping three chances, and hurting his finger, as six went down in the field as the Scots made 180.

It was the biggest score Australia conceded in the pool games, but Marsh said the “trust” was ever-present among the team and he held no fears of a repeat effort in Antigua.

Australia has to finish top two in the pool of four teams to progress to the semi-finals.

Bangladesh is coached by recently departed NSW assistant Chandika Hathurusingha who is as familiar with the inner-workings of David Warner, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood as just about any international coach at this World Cup.

Furthermore, the Bangladesh bowling coach is former Kiwi international Andre Adams who had a great rapport with Starc during his own tenure at Cricket NSW.
