Australia clean sweep Sri Lanka to break ODI winning run record as Alyssa Healy and Rachel Haynes cut loose

Alyssa Healy carried her bat at Allan Border Field to post an unbeaten ton that sealed Australia’s 18th straight ODI win, a new record in the women’s game, and complete a 3-0 series victory.

Meg Lanning’s all-conquering Australian side are in rarefied air after Wednesday’s nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka handed them a record-breaking 18th consecutive ODI victory.

It would have taken a brave Sri Lankan performance to deny the Southern Stars another team milestone but not even Chamari Athapaththu’s century could stem the tide as Alyssa Healy (112 not out) and Rachel Haynes (63) chased down their rivals’ 8-195 total with frightening ease at Allan Border Field.

The Australian openers needed just 13 overs to bring up their 100-run partnership, with Healy taking a particular liking to Oshadhi Ranasinghe as she cracked her ton in just 71 deliveries.

Haynes, who was more subdued but no less valuable as she continued her rich vein of form this series, said the enormity of her side’s achievement was not lost upon them.

“We really are (proud), to be honest,” Haynes told Fox Cricket.

“To win the ICC championship is a great reflection of how dominant the team has been over the last little bit and it will be something we celebrate after the series.

(But) I don’t want to take anything away from the legacy of the team that held it before us – they laid a wonderful foundation for us.”

The Healy-Haynes partnership deserves plenty of credit as does Lanning (20 not out) for chasing down Sri Lanka inside 27 overs, but Australia’s dominance was made possible by a ruthless Australian bowling attack.

Athapaththu (103 from 124) played a lone hand for Sri Lankan as Meghan Schutt (2-44 from 10), Georgia Wareham (2-18 from 4) and Nicola Carey (1-28 from 10) squeezed their rivals out of contention.

In a day for milestones, Schutt’s first wicket led to her overtaking Karen Rolton on the all-time wicket takers list and move to 87 at the end of play, while Healy and Haynes’ 159-run stand became the 10th highest Australian women’s ODI opening partnership of all-time.

“She’s been pretty tremendous and certainly in the shorter forms of the game, she’s got a stranglehold on batters at this level, so it’s great to see,” Haynes said of Schutt.
