Brandon Grach KOs Liam Taliva’a – Rd 2
After one of the wildest rounds of the year, Brandon Grach needed just four seconds of the second round to sleep Liam Taliva’a.
In just his second pro fight, Grach’s stunning punch left Taliva’a unconscious on the canvas, while drawing the attention of that night’s main event, Nikita Tszyu, who was getting his hands wrapped backstage.
It also prompted star commentator, former world champion Shawn Porter, to swear on the broadcast. We’re told his reaction didn’t go down too well, but was the perfect way to sum up what we’d just seen.
Mark Schleibs KOs Shamal Ram Anuj – Rd 5
This one took place on the same card as the Grach knockout, but you might have missed it.
In the very first fight of the night, Schleibs was seemingly cruising towards a decision win when he connected with a perfect left hook to Anuj’s chin.
Anuj’s legs gave way as he slumped to the floor with one arm draped over the ropes.
It was a particularly emotional win for Schleibs, who broke down in tears when talking to this masthead about his son, Oscar, who he hasn’t seen in (nine) months.
Tim Tszyu KOs Carlos Ocampo – Rd 1
There was a massive amount of pressure on Tszyu’s shoulders going into this fight.
Not only was he making the first defence of his WBO interim world title, but he’d only just recovered from a serious dog bite suffered at a friend’s house weeks earlier.
Questions about stitches and the scar dominated the build-up, but Tszyu proved he’s the real deal with a brutal (68) first round stoppage.
Tim Tszyu vs. Tony Harrison – Rd 9
This was Tim Tszyu’s coming out party.
In front of a jam packed Qudos Bank Arena in his home town, against a former world champion, and broadcast live into the US, the stage was set for Tszyu to show the world what he could do.
And he didn’t disappoint.
Tszyu turned doubters into believers by overwhelming the more experienced Harrison and forcing the referee to save him in the ninth.
Nikita Tszyu KOs Ben Bommber – Rd 1
It was heated in the build-up, but, in the first big step up in opponent in his pro career, the younger Tszyu brother lived up to the hype in Melbourne.
Bommber actually landed an early shot, but Tszyu ended up butchering the Melburnian against the ropes.
Referee (name) was eventually forced to step in and save Bommber, and they both tumbled to the canvas as Tszyu celebrated.
It was the victory that propelled Tszyu into becoming a pay-per-view headliner.
Liam Taliva’a KOs Isaac Liki – Rd 1
Taliva’a was on the wrong side of the ledger against Grach, but has a contender for biggest KO of the year as well.
After seven opponents refused to fight him in July, Taliva’a took his frustrations out on Isaac Liki.
Taliva’a landed a vicious left hook in the middle of their heavyweight firefight, leaving Liki tumbling to the ground mid-punch.
