Australian MMA legend Renato Subotic has taken to social media to reveal he was detained during a recent trip to the United States.

Subotic, the head coach of the MMA Australian team, was heading to a seminar however he soon found himself behind bars.

The 33-year-old explained that immigration officials pulled him aside at the border due to an alleged issue with his visa.

It come amid public backlash at the Trump administration, which is using extraordinary measures to crack down on immigration, including invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a rarely used wartime authority.

“I arrived in America excited, ready to coach my seminar,” Subotic wrote on his Instagram post, which was titled ‘From Seminar to Cell: My 24 Hours in a US Federal Prison, arrested for to much knowledge in MMA’.

“It was supposed to be a great trip. Instead, I got stopped at the border. Immigration pulled me aside and took me into an isolated room. The officer interviewing me looked like he was looking for something wrong.”

He insisted that all information that immigration requested was provided.

“It was obvious why I was in the US. I gave them every specific detail about my seminar, my plans, everything.”

However, he claims authorities weren’t convinced, and after spending three hours in the room he was sent to jail.

“They told me there was a mistake with my visa and that they were taking me to jail ‘until they figure out what’s next’. Just like that. No clear explanation, no chance to talk to anyone, no rights. They handcuffed me, put me in a car, and drove me to federal prison.”

“The moment the door opened, it was chaos.”

According to Subotic, it was “madness”, with fights between gangs, screaming and arguments over food and what to watch on TV.

“The guard walked me to cell 221, where there was a filthy mattress with patches of piss and blood.”

He also got into a fight with two other inmates who tried to steal his blanket and sheet.

“When the guards rushed up, no one said anything. The guard looked at me and said, ‘You got a good welcome. Keep your head straight, or you’re gonna stay here longer,’” Renato Subotic added.
