Geelong United has signed respected dual athlete Monique Conti ahead of its inaugural WNBL season.
Conti, who splits her time between the WNBL and AFLW competitions, joins United after a season at Melbourne Boomers, whose license was transferred to Geelong.
The 5’5” guard is the seventh player signed to new United coach Chris Lucas’ squad.
Conti said she was excited for a “fresh start” in Geelong.
“We’re putting together a great group so I’m looking forward to what lies ahead,” Conti said.
The reigning AFLW best-and-fairest winner will line-up for Richmond Tigers this spring, with the season kicking off on August 30 before joining United for its maiden campaign.
At just 24, Conti wields an impressive resume across both sports.
A five-time all-Australian, Conti was best on ground in Western Bulldogs’ 2018 premiership before joining Richmond in 2020, where she has picked up club best and fairest awards in every season as a Tiger.
In the WNBL, Conti is a past Rookie of the Year and championship player in 2020 for Southside Flyers, with two separate stints at both the Boomers and Flyers since her debut in the 2016/17 season.
She averaged 8.1 points, three rounds and two assists across 23 games for the Boomers last season.
Lucas, who coached Conti at the Boomers, was pleased to welcome her to the new Geelong franchise.
“Her improvement last year, she really excelled and took on her role within the team,” Lucas said.
“She’s super fit, she brings a presence on the floor, she can shoot the ball and defensively she fits everything I want from her.”
