TAKE one look at Sydney Kings guard Kyle Adnam and it would be easy to assume he was a professional surfer.

The blond haired Adnam wouldn’t look out of place on the early morning waves at Bondi.

Beyond his appearance, though, the Kings guard is highly respected for his dogged refusal never to back down – regardless of his opponent.

BOLDEN DEBUT: Aussie star demands more of himself

This was on display when he played for Melbourne in an NBA pre-season game against a star-studded Oklahoma City side last year.

Adnam marked up against Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, even dropping a three-pointer in the All Star’s face.

“In the game I didn’t realise who I was defending, but then I saw the photo afterwards and I thought it was pretty cool,” Adnam said.

“Russell is my younger brother’s favourite player, so he was impressed.

“Then a few days later it hit me and really sunk in. It is something I won’t forget that is for sure.”

Adnam plans to use similar determination when the Kings take on the LA Clippers in Hawaii on Sunday morning from 11.30am (EST).

“It is the Aussie spirit and the blueprint of our country, which is pretty cool,” he said.

“We are not going to back down from a challenge but a challenge it will be.

“But we are all in it for the fight.”

Adnam said the Australian league, headed by boss Larry Kestlelman, have done a tremendous job rebuilding the relationship with the world’s best basketball competition.

“It is a credit to the NBL and the product that they are reeling out,” he said.

“On a worldwide stage it is noticed now and fortunately we get to be a part of that.

“It is a dream come true. As much as I play the game, I also grew up a fan of it as well.

“To be out there against that calibre of players alongside my teammates is pretty cool.

“But once a ball goes up, it is just another game and we just have to go out there and give our best effort.”
