The Benjamin Button of Australian basketball David Barlow has earned another recall to the national team following the withdrawal of NBA young gun Jonah Bolden.

Two-time Olympian Barlow, 35, will be available for the Boomers’ friendlies against Team USA on Thursday and Saturday in Melbourne before going to China to challenge for a World Cup medal.

Barlow surged back into Boomers calculations last season emerging as a pivotal piece for Melbourne United.

Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis rewarded veteran Barlow, who previously endured debilitating foot and achilles injuries that threatened his professional career, last November with selection for the World Cup qualifier against Iran.

Bolden’s withdrawal last week coupled with Brock Motum’s return to Europe opened the door for Barlow.

“I’m unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to represent my country in the upcoming World Cup,” Barlow said.

“I look forward to doing whatever is asked of me in order to help the team win.

“Sincerest thanks to those that have put their faith in me and also to those that have helped me get to this point in my career.

“I’m very lucky to be able to wear the green and gold again.”

Clutch three-point shooter Barlow started all 34 games for United last season, averaging 11 points and 4.5 rebounds.

Lemanis said Barlow’s skill set “compliments” the Boomers “nicely”.

“He brings strength and versatility at the defensive end,” Lemanis said.

“David’s basketball IQ and previous experience in the system will allow him to slot in quickly with the team.

“There are plenty of great moments being involved in the national team, speaking with David and hearing the sincerity with which he spoke when describing just what this opportunity means to him is another one of those wonderful moments.”
