BASEBALL Australia has listed Uluru as one of its six ideal locations for the inaugural Australian Baseball5 Championships set to play in July after a strong pitch by Baseball NT.

Baseball5 is a new five-on-five, five-inning street version of baseball akin to 3x3 for basketball or the big bash in cricket, designed as a more accessible entry point to the sport.

Uluru was listed alongside Melbourne’s iconic Hosier Lane, Brisbane’s Mt Coot-Tha Lookout, the Perisher Ski Resort in the Snowy Mountains, Sydney’s Taronga Zoo and Adelaide’s Glenelg Beach.

Baseball NT general manger Gemma Scales was stoked that Baseball Australia was taking the pitch seriously and hopes to turn the NT into the number one location for Baseball5 in the country.

“We’re excited and we have worked pretty hard to put together a pretty solid pitch proving why we should host the tournament,” Scales told the NT News.

“Baseball5 is quite a new innovative product that removes the barriers of our sport with less players on each team and less equipment as players bat with their hands.

“It’s a safe and inclusive version of the game that adults and kids can play together. They are looking for an iconic, innovative place to host the tournament and nothing is more iconic than Uluru.”

The tournament is due to take place on July 17-19 but Scales believes those dates may not be viable due to the coronavirus crisis.

With the requirement of interstate travel, the tournament may be pushed back.

However, Baseball NT, in partnership with the No More campaign on all things Baseball5, is still optimistic on the Red Centre’s chances.

“We’re yet to give the sport a proper try here at the moment, we had some come-and-try days planned before COVID-19 emerged,” Scales said.

“In Darwin we have a few up-and-coming players in our younger age grounds that could become ambassadors of the sport such as Blake Gilbert.

“Our coach in Alice Springs Brian Vidler is another, it will also be good to see him get back out there to play.”
