LIGHTNING women booked themselves an early ticket to the Championship grand final with a 63-49 win over the previously undefeated Tracy Village Jets in the major semi-final.

Despite their status as reigning champions Lightning had failed to beat the Jets squad through the regular season however with their full squad finally together the premiers kicked into gear.

Jets went into the first break ahead following strong performances from women’s 2020 Championship MVP Kylie Duggan (13 points) and Michelle Ellis (11 points).

However, scoring was defensive pressure from Lightning saw the Jets limited for scoring in the following quarters.

Lightning took off in the third quarter with April Rummery Lamb (24 points) particularly potent from the free throw line.

Captain Claire Maree O’Bryan (13 points) and Dom Carbone (nine points) also fired keeping the scoreboard ticking even as Tracy Village attempted to stage their comeback in the final quarter.

“It’s a good feeling to get the win as beating Jets doesn’t happen very often and we haven’t done it all season,” O’Bryan told the NT News.

“We know they’re a tough competitor and that they’re always in the top spot so it was good to get the win.

“This is the first time we’ve had a full squad against them so we know that everyone has to play their role and just pressure them defensively because when they’re scoring we’ve got no chance.

“We won’t let up from here. We have to get a few good training sessions in to stay fit and focused ready for the grand final against whoever that may be.”

With the double chance on their side Jets will look to fight their way into the grand final next week when they take on the winner of the knock out semi-final between Ansett and Essington Cannons.
