NFL commentator’s Taylor Swift slip up sparks social media uproar

An American commentator, known for calling things before they happen, has sent Taylor Swift fans wild with a one word gaffe.

Tony Romo got a little bit ahead of himself with Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s relationship status.

Romo has sent audiences into uproar again, this time by referring to Swift as Kelce’s “wife” during the CBS live broadcast of the Kansas City Chiefs vs Buffalo Bills game on Monday, the NY Post reports.

Romo’s commentary came during the second quarter when the camera cut to a video of Swift cheering from her box after Kelce made a catch.

“You can see Kelce’s wife Taylor Swift in the audience,” Romo said on air before correcting himself.

“I’m sorry, girlfriend.”

“Not yet,” Jim Nantz responded. “You don’t know something we don’t know, do you?”

The presumably accidental blip has sent Swifties – and Kelce fans – into a frenzy on social media.

“Tony Romo has made a TV career out of knowing what will happen next. He may have just done it again,” one user wrote.

“I SCREAMEEEEEDDDDDD,” another user shared.

Romo is no stranger to causing an uproar on the broadcast.

He called co-host Jim Nantz “sexy” during the Cowboys-Commanders game on Nov. 23, causing fans to express discontent with his broadcast style.

Swift recently confirmed in her Time Person of the Year interview that she and the Chiefs’ tight-end have been romantically involved since July.

“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell,” she said in the interview.

“We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other.

The star-studded couple was first linked in September and went public with their relationship the next month when they were photographed holding hands in New York City.

“By the time I went to that first game (Sept. 24), we were a couple,” Swift told Time. “I think some people think that they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.”

The Chiefs are coming of their first loss with Swift in attendance last week. But still, rumours of a wedding are a bit premature.

The incident comes just one week after Swift’s publicist Tree Paine shut down rumours that Swift had previously married long-time boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

“Enough is enough with these fabricated lies about Taylor from Deuxmoi. There was NEVER a marriage or ceremony of ANY kind. This is an insane thing to post,” Paine wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s time for you to be held accountable for the pain and trauma you cause with posts like these.”

Deuxmoi later apologised for the rumour.
