The contest was stopped for several minutes as medical personnel attended to Phillips, who has also worked with the Chargers in his NFL coaching career.

Phillips, 69, was placed on a stretcher and immobilised before being lifted onto a cart and driven off the field. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

The Broncos said he was alert and had movement in all of his extremities. He lifted his index finger in a “number 1” sign as he was driven off.

The team later said that Phillips was “doing great”.

“He’s upbeat, watched the game. All indications are that he will be back quickly,” the team said on Twitter.
