FORMER National Football League player Joe McKnight was shot and killed after an apparent road rage incident.

FORMER National Football League player Joe McKnight was shot and killed after an apparent road rage incident in a suburb of New Orleans.

“Rest in peace, Joe McKnight. Our thoughts and condolences are with his loved ones,” the Jets wrote on their Twitter site.

The shooting took place after an argument between two men at the intersection of Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard in Terrytown, Louisiana, The Times-Picayune newspaper reported.

Witnesses told the newspaper they saw a man yelling at another man before shooting him. The shooter then stood over the injured man and said, “I told you don’t you (expletive) with me.”

A witness said the man who was shot was trying to apologise.

Jefferson Parish Sherriff’s officer Newell Normand told the newspaper that Ronald Glasser, 54, has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. The police said they have recovered the weapon used in the shooting.

McKnight, 28, played for four years in the NFL with the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs. He played this past season for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League where he ran for a total of 228 yards on 38 carries.

McKnight also played college football with the University of Southern California Trojans.

Former teammates of McKnight reacted with shock at news of the player’s death.

“RIP my brother Joe McKnight,” former Trojans running back Reggie Bush said. “This one hurts bad.”
