WILL they stay or will they go?
Jay Clark runs the rule over the stars coming into free agency in 2017.
NAT FYFE (Fremantle)
Midfielder, 24, 190cm
CLARKY SAYS: The game’s biggest midfield jet will weigh up Freo’s future before recommitting. Has not yet ruled out a move to a Melbourne club.
BIG FISH: WHO’S COMING INTO FREE AGENCY IN 2017
TIGER HUNT: FIVE CLUBS INTO DUSTIN MARTIN
MICHAEL HURLEY (Essendon)
Defender, 26, 193cm
CLARKY SAYS: Likely to make up his mind when he returns from overseas later this season. Melbourne and Western Bulldogs extremely keen.
DUSTIN MARTIN (Richmond)
Midfielder, 25, 187cm
CLARKY SAYS: Would expect him to stay at Richmond after the Tigers nurtured him through a series of off-field difficulties. Still, not sure he loves the Melbourne footy bubble.
TOM ROCKLIFF (Brisbane Lions)
Midfielder, 26, 185cm
CLARKY SAYS: You would not blame him for holding off on contract talks after another dire year at the Lions. Every man has his breaking point.
GARY ROHAN (Sydney Swans)
Utility, 25, 189cm
CLARKY SAYS: Probably played the best game of his injury-marred career on Thursday night, showing what the electric forward is capable of. The Cats love him.
STEVE MOTLOP (Geelong)
Midfield-forward, 25, 185cm
CLARKY SAYS: Signed a big-money deal to stay at Geelong after holding out last year and delivered, finishing second in the best-and-fairest. Much more up and down this season.
SAM REID (Sydney Swans)
Utility, 24, 196cm
CLARKY SAYS: Collingwood wants to get its hands on Reid and help fix his soft-tissue problems. A versatile match-winner at best, but simply hasn’t been able to stay on the park.
LUKE BREUST (Hawthorn)
Midfield-forward, 25, 184cm
CLARKY SAYS: Would be happy to stay in the Hawks’ nest but rivals could try and tempt the sharpshooter with a more lucrative offer.
JASPER PITTARD (Port Adelaide)
Defender, 25, 186cm
CLARKY SAYS: One of the most damaging backmen in the competition probably doesn’t attract the accolades he deserves. In the Hawthorn mould.
JACKSON TRENGOVE (Port Adelaide)
Defender-ruckman, 25, 197cm
CLARKY SAYS: Homesick a couple of years ago and has been forced to play as a makeshift ruckman for Port this season. Paddy Ryder returns next year, but has Port gone backwards?
DAVID ZAHARAKIS (Essendon)
Midfielder, 26, 182cm
CLARKY SAYS: Has stepped up magnificently this season, fulfilling his midfield potential. Has gone through the hardest part at Essendon so it would be a surprise if he bailed out.
JOSH KENNEDY (Sydney Swans)
Midfielder, 28, 188cm
CLARKY SAYS: Every year Victorian clubs say Kennedy is one they would love to get. Midfield bull lauded for his leadership and character.
BRETT DELEDIO (Richmond)
Utility, 29, 188cm
CLARKY SAYS: Would he relish a move to a premiership contender in the twilight of his career the same way Steve Johnson has kicked on at Greater Western Sydney this year?
RYAN SCHOENMAKERS (Hawthorn)
Utility, 25, 195cm
CLARKY SAYS: Always talked about as one who could move, and James Sicily and Tim O’Brien have taken their chances up forward in his absence through injury. Required player.
DAVID MUNDY (Fremantle)
Midfielder, 30, 192cm
CLARKY SAYS: Has tailed off a touch since assuming captaincy this season but is not unlike Shaun Burgoyne with his classy disposal. Hawks were into him a few years ago, too.
LACHLAN KEEFFE (Collingwood)
Defender, 24, 206cm
CLARKY SAYS: Would surely want to repay Collingwood, which stood by him through drugs crisis. But hard to know where he fits into Pies’ backline with Jack Frost, Nathan Brown, Ben Reid and Jeremy Howe.
AARON BLACK (North Melbourne)
Forward, 25, 192cm
CLARKY SAYS: Has struggled a bit in the VFL and been leapfrogged on a forward flank by Mason Wood. Looks a certainty to seek a fresh start.
