Kayne Turner handed four-week ban by North Melbourne leaders after being caught drink driving

NORTH Melbourne forward Kayne Turner will have to win back his teammates’ respect in the wake of his drink-driving charge, Lindsay Thomas says.

NORTH Melbourne forward Kayne Turner will have to win back his teammates’ respect in the wake of his drink driving charge, according to Kangaroos’ goal kicker Lindsay Thomas.

The 20-year-old has been suspended for four-weeks by the club, with his ban to begin after he completes recovery from a hamstring injury which could put him out of the senior side until Round 17.

Turner, who has played 21 games in his three seasons at North, blew .133 while driving home on Sunday morning, was charged by police and is set to lose his licence for 13 months.

North Melbourne tagger Ben Jacobs will have surgery on his injured foot on Tuesday and is expected to return in 8-10 weeks.

Thomas said Turner had apologised to teammates but would have to work hard to regain their trust.

“He has let the playing group down,” Thomas said.

“He would have been back (playing) in a couple of weeks.

“He will just have to get the respect back from the boys and the coaching staff by the way he trains and way he conducts himself around the club.”

The hard-nut played in two of North Melbourne’s finals last season but faces a stint in the VFL as he attempts to come back from another hamstring injury.

Thomas said Turner would recover from the drink-driving setback.

“Everyone makes mistakes and obviously he has made one he will regret,” Thomas said.

“But knowing the person that Kayne is, he will move on and he will learn from it.”

Turner will also be required to complete a road safety course and education program as part of his punishment.

The Roos will attempt to continue their undefeated run against Sydney Swans at the SCG on Friday night.

Ruckman Todd Goldstein last night took a four-vote lead in the AFL Coaches Association award ahead of superstar Geelong midfielder Patrick Dangerfield.

Daniel Wells remains in the mix to play the Swans after missing their North’s win over Carlton with achilles soreness.

Thomas said Wells trained lightly at the club on Monday, with North coach Brad Scott unlikely to take any risks with the star playmaker.

North Melbourne released a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) on Monday to help improve its links with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“North Melbourne has a proud indigenous history that has been well documented over the past 147 years of our existence,” chief executive Carl Dilena said.

“This RAP outlines how we will further build upon our relationships, demonstrate our respect and seek out opportunities to ensure our links to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders community remain strong.

“This commitment will allow us to honour those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have pulled on the North Melbourne jumper, while also helping us to provide a pathway for young indigenous talent and create the most inclusive and welcoming environment for our people through a sense of belonging.”
