The AFL is set to issue suspensions and fines to up to 10 GWS Giants players following allegations of player misconduct at a post-season gathering.
The ‘Wacky Wednesday’ celebration which took place on September 18 in Sydney saw players dress up for the event. The theme is believed to surround celebrity couples, with some of the players acting out skits concerning their attire.
While it was a private event, an anonymous complaint about the outfits and behaviour was received by the club who launched an internal review. They also worked in tandem with the AFL Integrity Unit to explore the claims.
The initial review confirmed that no members of the public were involved in the activities, while the Giants’ investigation also confirmed no illegal conduct took place.
However, the AFL is set to hand down sanctions for as many as 10 players which could include suspensions for the 2025 season.
The Giants issued a statement on Tuesday night confirming the investigation.
“The Giants are aware of an anonymous allegation of inappropriate behaviour at the players’ end-of-season event last month,” the statement said.
“The club and its integrity unit have been working with the AFL’s integrity unit to investigate. The club will make no further comment until the outcomes of the investigation have been finalised.”
The AFL reiterated the Giants’ statement, saying there would be no further comment until the investigation was completed.
“The AFL and the GWS Giants have been undertaking an investigation into the Giants players’ post-season event which is in its final stages,” the statement read.
“An update will be provided by the AFL once the investigation has concluded.”
Some players were spotted in the Sydney CBD area in dress-up attire on the day, however, none of those players sighted are suggested to have been involved in the inappropriate behaviour.
Many of the club’s players are currently on holiday overseas and those facing sanctions were only informed on Tuesday. They will now be given the opportunity to respond to the notices.
