Hollywood is coming to Geelong’s premier sports precinct when Superman actor David Corenswet descends on the footy ground to film a new movie later this month.

GMHBA Stadium could be off limits for up to 10 days ahead of Geelong’s Round 9 clash against GWS with a US movie to be filmed at the ground.

Scenes of the upcoming flick Mr Irrelevant – about late NFL draft pick in 1983, John Tuggle – will be filmed at Kardinia Park between rounds seven and nine from late April to early May.

Actor David Corenswet, who was cast as Superman in the latest celluloid iteration of the famous comic book, will star as Tuggle in the Jonathon Levine-directed film.

The moniker “Mr Irrelevant” has become synonymous with players being selected with the last pick in the draft since the 1970s.

Filming is slated for 10 days but it could be less than that under production company Skydance.

It comes on the back of a host of high profile movies being shot in the region, with many in or near Little River.

Scenes from the 2003 flick Ned Kelly, starring the late Heath Ledger, was shot there, while the original Mad Max (1979) was filmed both at Little River and at Fairhaven on the Great Ocean Rd.

Meanwhile, the Nicolas Cage-starring vehicle Ghost Rider (2007) was shot at Balliang and Little River while two years later Knowing, also with Cage at the top of the bill, was filmed on the Geelong Ring Rd.

Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are (2009) was shot at a quarry near Little River.

Actor David Corenswet, who has been cast as Superman in the latest celluloid iteration of the famous comic book, will also star as Tuggle in the Jonathon Levine-directed film.

Tuggle was selected by the New York Giants in the 1983 draft.

Emmy-nominated Nick Santora (Prison Break) wrote the script for Mr Irrelevant.

Geelong’s next home game at Kardinia Park is against the Giants.

The club was contacted for comment.

It comes amid a desire from ground managers Kardinia Park Stadium Trust to diversify its offerings when possible, with international rock band the Foo Fighters playing there in March, 2022.

In a statement, the trust said it was committed to seeing the stadium used for a range of diverse sporting, entertainment and community events, along with AFL and AFLW.

“(We continue) to explore opportunities taking into account existing stadium commitments,” the trust said.
