Bye rounds always throw up some crazy results, and this week was no exception.
SuperCoach stars Marcus Bontempelli and Nick Daicos went toe-to-toe but some other stars flopped while we also saw some wild swings within games.
Here are all the heroes and villains of round 12.
WINNERS
MARCUS BONTEMPELLI – 186 POINTS
The Bulldogs skipper staged an epic SuperCoach shootout with Nick Daicos on Friday night, and for three quarters Daicos had the upper hand. That was until the Bont completely owned the final term with 14 disposals and a goal to lead the Dogs to victory. Bont finished with his highest score of the season, while Daicos’s 156 wasn’t too shabby, either.
DYLAN MOORE – 169 POINTS
The forward line has been a source of ongoing frustration in 2024, including for coaches who traded in Moore after a hot run a month ago only to bank three scores under 80. But he was in his own league on Saturday, racking up 27 disposals and five goals.
TOM DE KONING – 140 POINTS
Put this one in your SuperCoach little black book. De Koning is going to be a serious SuperCoach ruck player, and it might be earlier than we thought. With Marc Pittonet out injured, De Koning has put up two scores over 130 in the past two rounds to take his season average to 92. Against Port Adelaide he gathered 18 disposals, 12 contested possessions, eight clearances and a goal.
TIM ENGLISH – 131 POINTS
If someone said at the start of the year you could get Tim English for $565k, we would have predicted coaches falling over themselves to grab last year’s No.2 overall scorer at a $150k discount. His form in recent weeks made plenty hesitant, but the 7000 who took the punt would have enjoyed a vintage performance against the Pies – 16 disposals (at 100 per cent efficiency), seven marks and 14 hitouts to advantage. He’s still great value!
LUKE RYAN – 124 POINTS
Far from Ryan’s biggest score of the season but this was in unexpected circumstances, with Melbourne recording a shockingly low 37 inside-50s for the game and giving Ryan only seven opportunities to kick in from a behind. Fortunately, he has plenty of other scoring avenues, recording 18 marks and 28 disposals at 93 per cent efficiency.
JACK STEELE – 118 POINTS
Steele owners were revising their bye trade plans at quarter-time in Perth when the Saints skipper had zero disposals and zero tackles despite playing the entire quarter in the centre square. Whatever Ross Lyon said at quarter-time worked – he racked up eight disposals and seven tackles in the second term alone and finished with a massive 15 tackles.
NAT FYFE – 104 POINTS
It’s been a rough ride for Fyfe owners in recent weeks but this is exactly what the doctor ordered. Fremantle has a bye next round – is it time to wave goodbye to the champ?
MASSIMO D’AMBROSIO – 103 POINTS
D’Ambrosio looked done as a SuperCoach proposition when he was subbed off round 6 then left out of the team the next week. But he has staged a form revival over the past three rounds with scores of 102, 107 and 103 to push his price towards $400k.
ZAC WILLIAMS – 85 POINTS
Who knew Williams was a small forward all along? Williams has made his name as a rebounding defender but a role change has produced positive results for the Blues, and SuperCoach, with seven goals. Handy for the 28,000 SuperCoaches who still have Zac in their squad.
SAM DARCY – 81 POINTS
A wild night for Darcy and his SuperCoach owners. He opened the game by giving away two 50m penalties to sit on -21 points, but was fantastic after that – scoring over 100 from that point. It’s likely to be his last game for most coaches, however, with a two-game suspension set to keep the star rookie out until after the Bulldogs’ bye.
LOSERS
TOM STEWART – 76 POINTS
The setup was perfect for a big Stewart score. Playing at home against an undermanned Richmond, which has given up some monster scores to opposition half-backs in recent weeks. After a big second term he appeared on track for one of the 100-plus totals he has delivered regularly in recent years, but he faded as the Cats took over the contest to finish with just 18 disposals. Cross him off as a trade-in option, and owners might contemplate a sideways move on the Cats’ round 14 bye.

HARLEY REID – 71 POINTS
If you only checked the scores on Saturday night this might seem harsh, but Reid absolutely dominated this contest in the first half and almost hit the 100-point mark before he was stopped in his tracks by Marcus Windhager. To top it off, a dangerous tackle has landed him with a two-match ban from the match review officer.
NICK VLASTUIN – 5816 POINTS
It’s a tough life playing in defence for Richmond at the moment. Vlastuin was averaging 122.5 after the first four rounds, but he has hit 100 points only twice in the six rounds since. He had just 14 disposals, no marks and no tackles against Geelong.
JORDAN DAWSON – 55 POINTS
Coming off scores of 142, 107 and 158 in his past three games, Dawson was locked in for another big day against the Hawks. Right? Whispers of a late fitness test before the game were a warning sign and the day could hardly have gone worse for the Crows captain, who could manage only 15 touches. Expect a big bounce back against Richmond.
DARCY WILSON – 54 POINTS
Wilson has been one of the best rookies of the season but couldn’t get into the game against West Coast at all in the first half. He had just 13 points at the main change but surged after halftime to record a semi-respectable total, despite the best efforts of Harley Reid to slam him into the turf. He will be high in trade discussions again this week – do you need him to make up the numbers until St Kilda’s bye in round 15?
SAM CLOHESY – 48 POINTS
Shaping as another trade out candidate after falling well short of his 77 Break Even against the Bombers. Most teams will have enough players available in round 13 to cut him loose before Gold Coast’s bye the next week.
DANIEL TURNER – 9 POINTS
Turner burst onto the rookie radar with three goals and 101 points in his first game for the season. Since then he hasn’t gone close to those heights, with scores of 20 and 26 before Sunday’s six-disposal effort that also included giving away two free kicks.
