Herald Sun expert Michael Warner reveals his first draft SuperCoach AFL team for 2019

Herald Sun expert Mick Warner has picked an experimental first SuperCoach team as he looks to save money on his rucks and load up elsewhere. His motto … save on your rucks and celebrate in September.

Why pay overs for Max Gawn or Brodie Grundy when you can get Big Mummy for $400k less?

Granted Shane Mumford won’t be available until Round 3, but that’s when we start playing for premiership points, and let’s be honest, most of us play for wins, not ranking points. Premiership big man Nathan Vardy ($306,400) fills my second ruck role and will get plenty of work in the absence of defector Scott Lycett and the injured Nic Nat.

DEFENCE

The extra cash allows you to load up across the ground and I’ve gone for Jake Lloyd, Lachie Whitfield and Richmond’s kick-in specialist Jayden Short to lead my defence. Young Bulldog Ed Richards could be anything (and costs just $319,500) while ex-Swan Nic Newman will get a stack of footy for the Blues.

MIDFIELD

Hard to go past superstars Nat Fyfe, Patrick Cripps and Lachie Neale, while Dustin Martin is a bargain at $563,800. Adam Treloar is also well-priced and ex-Tiger Anthony Miles, who will play inside mid for the Suns all season, is free money at $342,000. Will Setterfield is a no-brainer at $144,900 and throw first-year Richmond midfielder Jack Ross onto your bench. He’s turned heads across the pre-season and could crack a game early.

FORWARD

He’s available as a forward, but surely Patrick Dangerfield plays predominant midfield this year? Isaac Heeney will go to another level for Sydney, Kane Lambert is too cheap ($481,800) and Jack Higgins was born to score SuperCoach points.

Moral of the story: Save on your rucks … and celebrate in September.
