An AFL debut for Essendon mid-season draft star Saad El-Hawli has been put on hold after a cruel injury blow.
El-Hawli wowed onlookers with an explosive 27 disposals, eight marks, four goals and 148 SuperCoach points in the VFL on Sunday.
But he left the field in the last quarter after his ankle was caught under a contest, and scans have revealed a syndesmosis injury that will sideline him for 6-8 weeks.
It was one of the standout performances in the state leagues on the weekend, when almost 200 AFL-listed players featured in the VFL, SANFL and WAFL.
Brisbane veteran Jarryd Lyons posted the highest score of the week, registering 183 points after racking up 32 disposals and three goals against Footscray. It was a familiar stat line for Lyons, who is averaging 155 in the VFL this season but sits outside the Lions’ best 23.

Among the other standouts over the June 8-9 weekend – round 11 in the VFL, round 9 in the SANFL and round 10 in the WAFL:
BULLDOG Jedd Busslinger ($123,900 DEF) took five intercept marks and had 27 disposals to register 133 SuperCoach points. It wasn’t out of the blue – he has scored 113, 93, 119 and 133 in his past four games – and the first-round draft pick is in the mix to replace injured defender Alex Keath this week.
RICHMOND’S mid-season draftee Jacob Blight ($102,400 DEF) scored 101 points from 18 disposals and three intercept marks, backing up his 135-point game the week before. He’s ready to go if the Tigers need him.
TOBY McMullin ($157,700 FWD) few from Tasmania to Melbourne on Sunday morning after playing as the sub for the Giants in the AFL, and kicked a goal to go with 21 disposals in the VFL to finish with 106 SuperCoach points.
BIGOA Nyuon is unlikely to break back into North Melbourne’s AFL line-up any time soon based on his VFL numbers – one disposal, six spoils and 22 SuperCoach points last round, and a three-round average of 26.
LAWSON Humphries could add to the list of genius Geelong recruiting moves. Plucked from WAFL club Swan Districts at age 20 with the second-last pick in last year’s draft, the speedy defender has averaged 97 SuperCoach points in 10 matches for the Cats’ VFL outfit. Against the Swans on Sunday he collected 28 disposals, hitting the target with 15 of his 18 kicks including the sealing goal to finish with 148 SuperCoach points.
