WHO starred and who flopped in Round 8?

We look at the best and worst SuperCoach performances of the round.

ADELAIDE 72 def by GEELONG 98

Crows studs: Rory Sloane (142) was huge against the Cats, top scoring courtesy of 28 disposals (17 contested), 11 tackles, nine clearances and seven inside 50s. He had his hands in everything. Charlie Cameron (105) spent time across halfback and showed promise, while Ricky Henderson (101) was important in his second game back. Eddie Betts notched a respectable 88 but was well held overall.

Crows duds: Brodie Smith. What’s up? The defender had arguably his worst game for the Crows with just six disposals and 22 SuperCoach points. Ouch. Brad Crouch (46) wasn’t much better, he certainly hasn’t lived up to the hype. Paul Seedsman (53) had a night to forget after missing a crucial goal in the last term that would have boosted his score and Taylor Walker (55) didn’t have an impact.

Cats studs: Cam Guthrie is having a breakout season and had the ball on a string on Friday night, top scoring for the Cats with 138 points after 36 disposals. Patrick Dangerfield had a good night against his old side, gathering 33 disposals for 132 points but didn’t use the ball as he would have liked. No one can stop Steven Motlop (129) at the moment, while Zac Smith (123) was excellent in the ruck. Corey Enright (112) kicked an important goal and Lachie Henderson (102) had his best game for the Cats.

Cats duds: He was one of the most popular buys this week but Joel Selwood (69) was very disappointing after 24 disposals and 50 per cent efficiency. Mark Blicavs (80) owners expect more from the reigning Geelong best and fairest winner. Tom Lonergan (0) didn’t register a point after being knocked out in the opening minutes.

ESSENDON 60 def by NORTH MELBOURNE 74

Dons studs: Zach Merrett has been one of the big improvers this year and he did his job very well again on Saturday, top scoring for the Bombers with 130 SuperCoach points. Stand in vice-captain Mark Baguley (120) wasn’t too far behind, while skipper Brendon Goddard had 38 disposals for 109 points. Adam Cooney (102) also scored triple figures, while Matt Dea (88) is back in form.

Dons duds: Coming off scores of 96 and 88 Mitch Brown burned those who took the punt and put him on the field. He scored just 29 points. David Zaharakis (46) copped the Ben Jacobs tag and absolutely bombed, as did Nathan Grima (41) against his old side. Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (70) and Michael Hartley were OK.

North studs: Sam Gibson is having an excellent season and picked up another 36 disposals for 132 SuperCoach points, the top scorer on the ground. Robbie Tarrant (110) was good in defence, while skipper Andrew Swallow (108) had one of his best games. Todd Goldstein (105) scraped into triple figures after starting on the bench ruck partner for the day Majak Daw (97) was excellent. You’ll take the 96 and 95 from Brent Harvey and Jarrad Waite.

North duds: Jack Ziebell (72) can go big or score mid-range and today it was the latter. Drew Petrie (67) kicked a couple of goals but like the rest of his teammates was quiet in the second half. Ben Brown (36) had just five disposals.

HAWTHORN 116 def FREMANTLE 75

Hawks studs: Welcome back to form Jordan Lewis. The Hawks vice-captain led from the front with 25 disposals, nine inside 50s, eight tackles and eight clearances for 122 SuperCoach points. Defender Josh Gibson (118) was just as good, controlling the halfback line for the Hawks, while Ben McEvoy (105) did the damage in the ruck and around the ground with 12 disposals, seven tackles and two goals. Isaac Smith (103) was at his running and damaging best, while Jack Gunston (96) was a target all game and Daniel Howe (90) enjoyed his day in Tassie.

Hawks duds: It was an even performance from the Hawks but we expect more from Sam Mitchell who had 26 disposals for just 85 SuperCoach points. The same goes for Bradley Hill (63), who had 18 disposals.

Freo studs: Lachie Neale is a handball machine (he had 30 for the game) but needs to start kicking the ball more if he wants to get into the 140-range. Still, he was the game’s top scorer with 123. David Mundy (115) got back into form and was a rock in defence in the first half, while Michael Walters (101) was dangerous.

Freo duds: Danyle Pearce (49) didn’t set the world on fire and neither did experienced teammate Garrick Ibbotson (53). Ed Langdon (40) had just nine disposals and Connor Blakely (40) didn’t use the ball as well as he would have liked.

GWS GIANTS 149 def GOLD COAST 58

Giants Studs: Heath Shaw reigned supreme at Spotless Stadium with a huge 143 — an equal match-high. Jeremy Cameron booted seven goals — an equal career best — to tie Shaw’s effort. An amazing nine Giants reached triple figures, including debutant Jacob Hopper who collected 32 touches and 106 points.

Giants Duds: Rory Lobb could back up some of his recent performances and was the lowest scoring Giant on the day with 43 points. In Rory’s defence, he beat five Suns. Steve Johnson had a quieter night finishing with just 60 points.

Suns Studs: Not a single Sun reached triple figures. A rarity. Gary Ablett got close finishing with a team-high 99. Jesse Lonergan had his best game for the season with 97 and Matt Shaw was impressive with 96.

Suns Duds: Plenty to choice from. Sam Day had his hands full with Jeremy Cameron and only managed 33. Keegan Brooksby needs to have more impact if he’s to keep his spot after scoring 33 as well. Tom Lynch didn’t have much footy down his end and could only score 42. Nick Malceski and Kade Kolodjashnij finished with 53 and 56 respectively.

BRISBANE LIONS 65 def by COLLINGWOOD 143

Lions Studs: Dayne Zorko was a one-man band against the Magpies. The only Lion to reach triple figures and he did it in style with 19 touches, 4 goals and 130 points. Sam Mayes produced his best score in a long while with 91.

Lions Duds: Plenty to choose from here. Eight Lions finished with fewer than 50 points. Ryan Bastinac and Tom Bell were meant to be big-name recruits this season but finished Saturday with just 47 and 42 points. Claye Beams was the lowest scorer on the night with 23.

Magpies Studs: Stand up, Adam Treloar. The Magpies recruit as certainly produced the goods this season and finished Saturday with a match-high 169. Scott Pendlebury wasn’t far behind with 157. All up, nine Magpies reached triple figures, including American big man Mason Cox (102).

Magpies Duds: Ben Sinclair didn’t have much impact on his return from concussion, finishing with just 37 points. Brayden Maynard, Travis Varcoe and Levi Greenwood didn’t reach 50.

RICHMOND 101 def SYDNEY SWANS 100

Tigers Studs: Ben Griffiths kicked a career-best five goals to lead Richmond home and finished with 138. Brett Deledio was back to his very best at the MCG, scoring 125 as was Anthony Miles with 120. Sam Lloyd’s match-winning goal saw him up to 94 points.

Tigers Duds: Jake Batchelor was the Tigers lowest scorer with 29 points to his name. Ty Vickery didn’t see much action in the thrilling win and could only score 33. Connor Menadue continued to hurt owners with a 33.

Swans Studs: Dan Hannebery was the Perfect 9 pick of the night after finishing with 138 points. Kurt Tippett had a big night in the ruck and up forward to score 115 while Kieren Jack and Lance Franklin both finished with 101.

Swans Studs: Jack Hiscox was barely sighted on debut unfortunately and finished with a game-low 25. Tom Papley didn’t fare much better with just 29 at the final siren. George Hewett would have been a popular pick this week with a spate of injuries but could only score 54.

CARLTON 93 def PORT ADELAIDE 91

Blues studs: Bryce Gibbs is one of the big reasons why Carlton have gone on a winning streak and he delivered again against the Power with 30 disposals, seven tackles, six clearances and a goal for 147 points. Sam Docherty (147) has been one of the finds of the season in defence for SuperCoaches with another big score, while Matthew Kreuzer (133) kicked the match-winner and reminded everyone just how good he can be when he’s fit. Ed Curnow (129) had 27 disposals and milestone man Kade Simpson (125) had another big game. Patrick Cripps (115) was at his brilliant best and Zach Tuohy (97) was good across halfback.

Blues duds: Levi Casboult (2) was injured in the opening minutes but other than that there weren’t too many passengers for the Blues. Sam Kerridge (67) wasn’t as prolific as he has been and Dale Thomas (54) didn’t have much of an impact.

Power studs: It was a horror day for Port Adelaide but Hamish Hartlett was in good form, the only Power player to reach triple figures courtesy of 26 disposals and seven tackles for 129 points. Ollie Wines (99) was good, as was Aaron Young (95).

Power duds: Cam O’Shea had a day to forget as he managed just one SuperCoach point from eight disposals thanks to six clangers. Darcy Byrne-Jones (31) was barely sighted after 100 last week and Jared Polec (54) was quiet. Chad Wingard (63) looked dangerous at times but didn’t do enough.

MELBOURNE 82 def by WESTERN BULLDOGS 114

Demons studs: Jack Viney (116) was the only Demon in triple figures courtesy of his 25 dispsoals and 16 tackles. Dom Tyson, Tom McDonald and Bernie Vince all finished on 99 points — the latter reported during the second quarter for a high bump on Mitch Wallis.

Demons duds: Max Gawn (49) will be hurting after the in-form big man struggled to have an impact against the ferocious Dogs in and around stoppages. Spare a thought for those who had him as captain. Christian Petracca (61) did just enough.

Bulldogs studs: Tom Liberatore (128) put on a tackling clinic — joining Jude Bolton and Jack Ziebell win the AFL record books with 19 tackles to go with 25 touches and a goal. Lachie Hunter (125) dominated around the stoppages, while Marcus Bontempelli and Mitch Wallis did the grunt work.

Bulldogs duds: Caleb Daniel (53) did a couple of nice things here and there but not enough to boost his score. Shane Biggs (70) worked solidly off half back.

WEST COAST 132 def ST KILDA 29

Eagles Studs: Josh Kennedy was on fire in the first quarter, kicking five goals. He didn’t kick another but the damage was done and he was rewarded with a top score of 140. Matthew Priddis returned to form with 123 and Nic Naitanui was impressive with 116.

Eagles Duds: Jamie Cripps missed the party as the Eagles ran riot against the Saints, scoring just 48 points. In fairness, he beat seven Saints.

Saints Studs: Leigh Montagna continues to produce for the Saints and his SuperCoach owners, finishing with 110 points. Shane Savage kept up his scoring form with 106 while Jack Steven (102) and Seb Ross (101) also reached triple figures.

Saints Duds: There wasn’t a whole lot of football in the Saints’ forward line and Tim Membrey suffered, scoring a match-low 25. Blake Acres, Sam Gilbert, Jack Sinclair and Jade Gresham didn’t even reach 40 points.
