SuperCoach AFL stats dossier: Full CBAs, kick-ins, time on ground for round 8, captain advice for round 9
Champion Data reveals which teams give up the most points – and who to steer clear of. See this week’s top captain picks plus full CBAs and kick-ins.
Nick Daicos showed us last week, the obvious captain picks don’t always work out.
Max Gawn and Tristan Xerri are popular choices again this week, but Lloyd Meek is a much tougher opponent than Gawn has faced in recent weeks while Xerri has a showdown with Oscar McInerney – the best ruck blocker in the business.
Exclusive stats from Champion Data reveal how many SuperCoach points every team gives up in each position, and they point to a left-field captaincy candidate for round 9.

Ryan Maric is building into his new life as a defender at West Coast, last week putting up a career-high 131 SuperCoach points.
And this week he faces the Tigers, who leak the third-most points to general defenders this season. Last week Hawthorn’s defenders queued up against Richmond – Josh Battle 142, Changkuoth Jiath 135, Massimo D’Ambrosio 120, James Sicily 111. This week it’s Maric’s turn.
WHO TO TARGET THIS WEEK
Midfielders v Collingwood, Adelaide: The three best match-ups for midfielders this year are Melbourne, West Coast and Richmond, but most SuperCoach teams aren’t stacked with Hawks, Tigers or Eagles mids. Collingwood and Adelaide are next on the list for leaking points in the guts, and they throw up some interesting options – is this a bounce back game for Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong? Will Zak Butters repeat his 156 from last year’s Showdown?
Brisbane mids: The safest back-up C of the year. The Kangaroos also give up big points to mids – Merrett 172, Durham 120, Setterfield 117 last week alone – and Lachie Neale averages 135 in his past three against them. To top it off, he has played once at Ninja Stadium and scored 156.
Rucks v West Coast, Richmond, Hawthorn: There’s hope for Matt Flynn! Max Gawn, meanwhile, has the fifth-leakiest ruck match-up in Lloyd Meek, although his recent record against Hawthorn isn’t amazing (113, 91, 94 in his past three). But who would bet against him on current form? Tom De Koning should rebound this week with a favourable match-up against Rowan Marshall at the MCG, where he averages 122 this year.
General defenders v Gold Coast, Richmond, Collingwood: The Suns have leaked more points than any other team to general defenders this season – good news for Bailey Dale. Back in another big score from Ryan Maric against the Tigers while Jordan Clark should repay owners after a low score last week.
WHO TO AVOID THIS WEEK
Midfielders v Brisbane, Gold Coast, Fremantle: Last week the Lions held Noah Anderson to 105 and Matt Rowell to 53. Hopefully Harry Sheezel plays at half-back on Sunday. Gold Coast is also restrictive (sorry, Bulldogs), and Freo doesn’t give up many points in the midfield. Nick Daicos could buck the trend – he scored 130 in his past two encounters with the Dockers.
Rucks v Brisbane: A warning for Tristan Xerri captainers! Oscar McInerney is the hardest ruckman in the comp to score against, holding Jarrod Witts to 54, Darcy Cameron to 90 and Toby Nankervis to 87 in recent weeks. Xerri is in red-hot form (three-round average 149) but a return closer to the 115 he scored against the Big O last year might be closer to the mark.
General defenders v Carlton: The toughest team for rebounders to score against – it might be best to wait another week to bring in Jack Sinclair. Essendon is also restrictive in this part of the ground, which isn’t great news for Riley Bice and Matt Roberts, although Bice scored 124 in his one visit to Marvel Stadium.
Lachie Whitfield: Averages 82 in his past three against Geelong, including 69 at GMHBA Stadium last year.

Jack Sinclair has dropped three scores under 100 in SuperCoach, but the role is exactly what fantasy coaches want to see.
After experimenting with his centre square mix in recent weeks, Ross Lyon sent Sinclair and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera back into defence against the Dockers.
Both attended zero centre bounces in round 8, with Lyon handing responsibility to Hugo Garcia (18 CBAs), Hugh Boxshall (nine), while Mitch Owens (two) and Darcy Wilson (one) also had a crack.
The result for Sinclair was 20 disposals off half-back at 100 per cent efficiency, and you can buy him this week for $533,500, almost $60,000 under his starting price despite averaging 110 points a game.
One factor that held him back on Friday night – Fremantle kicked just three behinds for the game. He took two of those kick-ins, with Wanganeen-Milera claiming the other.
Champion Data’s exclusive weekly stat report also reveals another option in defence – Josh Daicos has a three-round average of 112.7 and took over kick-in duties on Saturday night. He took eight, playing on from all of them. But the Pies’ No.1 kick-in taker this season, Jeremy Howe, was managed against the Cats.
The report also reveals a spread of kick-in takers is hurting Jayden Short’s numbers at Richmond – against Hawthorn he was one of seven players to take a kick-in, Harvey Langford stepped into Clayton Oliver’s midfield role with 42 per cent CBAs, and Toby Travaglia joined the small club of players to get 0 per cent time on ground after being the unused sub for the Saints. Elijah Tsatas played a full game on his return for Essendon but his time on ground was just 60 per cent.
